1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1051
2	2	WHEREAS, The University Interscholastic League is
3	3	celebrating its 100th anniversary beginning in the summer of
4	4	2009; and
5	5	WHEREAS, The organization traces its roots back to June 7,
6	6	1909, when The University of Texas Board of Regents voted funds
7	7	for the creation of an extension bureau; this led to the
8	8	establishment of two programs, the Debating League of Texas High
9	9	Schools and the Interscholastic Athletic Association, which
10	10	merged in 1913 to form the University Interscholastic League; and
11	11	WHEREAS, Now operating under the vice president for
12	12	diversity and community engagement, the University
13	13	Interscholastic League is the largest organization of its kind in
14	14	the nation; providing Texas high school students with
15	15	opportunities for competition in academics, athletics, and
16	16	music, the organization oversees extracurricular contests in a
17	17	wide array of fields; by fostering a natural desire to excel, the
18	18	competitions encourage students to hone their talents and
19	19	cultivate skills that will forever enrich their lives;
20	20	involvement in the University Interscholastic League also helps
21	21	young people to develop such invaluable traits as
22	22	self-confidence, self-discipline, perseverance, and a sense of
23	23	fair play; and
24	24	WHEREAS, The University Interscholastic League annually
25	25	provides over two million educational competition opportunities
26	26	for Texas student participants, and those who have shared in that
27	27	experience include Lyndon B. Johnson, Ann Richards, Barbara
28	28	Jordan, Earl Campbell, Bill Moyers, and Sandra Day O'Connor;
29	29	moreover, the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation has
30	30	presented scholarships to gifted students taking part in the
31	31	University Interscholastic League Academic State Meet for some
32	32	five decades; today, the foundation annually awards more than a
33	33	million dollars in grants to over 600 students who will be
34	34	attending colleges and universities in Texas; and
35	35	WHEREAS, At its centennial, the University Interscholastic
36	36	League remains an institution of immeasurable importance to
37	37	students in Texas public schools, and it is a privilege to
38	38	recognize its continuing role in shaping the future leaders of
39	39	the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
40	40	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
41	41	Legislature, hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
42	42	University Interscholastic League and extend to all those
43	43	associated with the organization sincere best wishes for
44	44	continued success in all their endeavors; and, be it further
45	45	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
46	46	honor of the University Interscholastic League.
