44 Herbert Richard Custer
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Katy in mourning the loss of Herbert Richard Custer,
77 who died May 20, 2009, at the age of 83; and
88 WHEREAS, Herb Custer was born November 25, 1925, in San
99 Diego, California; he served the nation with honor and
1010 distinction during World War II aboard the submarine USS
1111 Silversides; and
1212 WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Custer returned to California
1313 and earned a bachelor's degree from Loyola University; he met and
1414 married his wife, Pat, and the couple started a family as he began
1515 a career in the oil business; and
1616 WHEREAS, Mr. Custer enjoyed a long and productive career,
1717 working for Atlantic Richfield before joining the Shell Oil
1818 Company, where he worked in human resources until his retirement
1919 in the early 1980s; and
2020 WHEREAS, Following his retirement, Mr. Custer embarked on
2121 a new career as a teacher; he began graduate studies working
2222 toward a master of business administration degree and taught
2323 classes at the University of Houston and Houston Community
2424 College; and
2525 WHEREAS, Mr. Custer remained loyal to his comrades in the
2626 submarine service as a lifelong member of the United States
2727 Submarine Society; proud of his Irish lineage, he was a founding
2828 member of the Irish American Heritage Association and was an avid
2929 follower of Notre Dame football; and
3030 WHEREAS, A man of humility, strength, and compassion, he
3131 gave generously to others; he was a devout man who practiced his
3232 faith in his daily life, and his sense of duty and enthusiasm for
3333 living each day to the fullest were an inspiration to all who knew
3434 him; and
3535 WHEREAS, Mr. Custer was a devoted husband, father, and
3636 grandfather, and his family and friends will continue to live
3737 with the cherished memories of his life and his many
3838 achievements; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4040 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4141 family of Herbert Richard Custer: his loving wife of 58 years,
4242 Pat; his children, Ellen, Cathy, Diane, Kevin, Tim, Daniel,
4343 Thomas, and Joseph; his brother, Joseph; and his six
4444 grandchildren; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4646 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4747 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4848 memory of Herbert Richard Custer.
