4	4	Herbert Richard Custer
5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
6	6	citizens of Katy in mourning the loss of Herbert Richard Custer,
7	7	who died May 20, 2009, at the age of 83; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Herb Custer was born November 25, 1925, in San
9	9	Diego, California; he served the nation with honor and
10	10	distinction during World War II aboard the submarine USS
11	11	Silversides; and
12	12	WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Custer returned to California
13	13	and earned a bachelor's degree from Loyola University; he met and
14	14	married his wife, Pat, and the couple started a family as he began
15	15	a career in the oil business; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Mr. Custer enjoyed a long and productive career,
17	17	working for Atlantic Richfield before joining the Shell Oil
18	18	Company, where he worked in human resources until his retirement
19	19	in the early 1980s; and
20	20	WHEREAS, Following his retirement, Mr. Custer embarked on
21	21	a new career as a teacher; he began graduate studies working
22	22	toward a master of business administration degree and taught
23	23	classes at the University of Houston and Houston Community
24	24	College; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Mr. Custer remained loyal to his comrades in the
26	26	submarine service as a lifelong member of the United States
27	27	Submarine Society; proud of his Irish lineage, he was a founding
28	28	member of the Irish American Heritage Association and was an avid
29	29	follower of Notre Dame football; and
30	30	WHEREAS, A man of humility, strength, and compassion, he
31	31	gave generously to others; he was a devout man who practiced his
32	32	faith in his daily life, and his sense of duty and enthusiasm for
33	33	living each day to the fullest were an inspiration to all who knew
34	34	him; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Mr. Custer was a devoted husband, father, and
36	36	grandfather, and his family and friends will continue to live
37	37	with the cherished memories of his life and his many
38	38	achievements; now, therefore, be it
39	39	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
40	40	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
41	41	family of Herbert Richard Custer: his loving wife of 58 years,
42	42	Pat; his children, Ellen, Cathy, Diane, Kevin, Tim, Daniel,
43	43	Thomas, and Joseph; his brother, Joseph; and his six
44	44	grandchildren; and, be it further
45	45	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
46	46	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
47	47	Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
48	48	memory of Herbert Richard Custer.
