                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1078
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
 recognizing the town of Premont on the occasion of its
 centennial, which was celebrated on April 18, 2009; and
 WHEREAS, Located in Jim Wells County, Premont was founded
 in 1909 by Charles Premont, the city's namesake, and Andres
 Canales, who established a general store at the town site; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Premont donated the funds to build the Santa
 Theresa Catholic Church, an institution that now ministers to
 three missions; in 1909, a post office opened in Premont; and
 WHEREAS, Between 1910 and 1912, the Premont community was
 advertised as a highly productive agricultural region, and the
 area attracted a large number of new settlers; and
 WHEREAS, By 1912, the town had 800 residents, and by 1914,
 the year the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway arrived and
 built a depot, the population had reached 1,000; in the early
 1930s, oil was discovered in the region, and in 1939, the town was
 incorporated; in 2000, Premont's population was 2,772; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to Premont, Texas, for its many
 assets and extend best wishes to its residents on the occasion of
 the town's centennial; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
 honor of the town of Premont.
