| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in |

| 3 | 3 | | recognizing the town of Premont on the occasion of its |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | centennial, which was celebrated on April 18, 2009; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Located in Jim Wells County, Premont was founded |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | in 1909 by Charles Premont, the city's namesake, and Andres |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Canales, who established a general store at the town site; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Premont donated the funds to build the Santa |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Theresa Catholic Church, an institution that now ministers to |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | three missions; in 1909, a post office opened in Premont; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Between 1910 and 1912, the Premont community was |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | advertised as a highly productive agricultural region, and the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | area attracted a large number of new settlers; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, By 1912, the town had 800 residents, and by 1914, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the year the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway arrived and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | built a depot, the population had reached 1,000; in the early |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | 1930s, oil was discovered in the region, and in 1939, the town was |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | incorporated; in 2000, Premont's population was 2,772; now, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to Premont, Texas, for its many |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | assets and extend best wishes to its residents on the occasion of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | the town's centennial; and, be it further |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | honor of the town of Premont. |
