11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1078
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
33 recognizing the town of Premont on the occasion of its
44 centennial, which was celebrated on April 18, 2009; and
55 WHEREAS, Located in Jim Wells County, Premont was founded
66 in 1909 by Charles Premont, the city's namesake, and Andres
77 Canales, who established a general store at the town site; and
88 WHEREAS, Mr. Premont donated the funds to build the Santa
99 Theresa Catholic Church, an institution that now ministers to
1010 three missions; in 1909, a post office opened in Premont; and
1111 WHEREAS, Between 1910 and 1912, the Premont community was
1212 advertised as a highly productive agricultural region, and the
1313 area attracted a large number of new settlers; and
1414 WHEREAS, By 1912, the town had 800 residents, and by 1914,
1515 the year the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway arrived and
1616 built a depot, the population had reached 1,000; in the early
1717 1930s, oil was discovered in the region, and in 1939, the town was
1818 incorporated; in 2000, Premont's population was 2,772; now,
1919 therefore, be it
2020 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
2121 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to Premont, Texas, for its many
2222 assets and extend best wishes to its residents on the occasion of
2323 the town's centennial; and, be it further
2424 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
2525 honor of the town of Premont.
