SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1088 In Memory of George Edwards WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Prairie View in mourning the loss of George Edwards, who died May 28, 2009, at the age of 60; and WHEREAS, A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, George Edwards was widely admired across the nation for his direction of the acclaimed Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm Band; and WHEREAS, Mr. Edwards joined the faculty at Prairie View A&M University in 1978; under his leadership, the Marching Storm Band came to be considered one of the most dynamic bands in the world for its unmatched musicianship and its stirring drum line; and WHEREAS, The band had numerous memorable performances under the direction of Mr. Edwards, including marching in President George W. Bush's Presidential Inaugural Parade and the 2009 Tournament of Roses Association Rose Parade in Pasadena, California; and WHEREAS, In addition to nurturing the musical talent of countless student performers over the course of more than 30 years, Mr. Edwards acted as a mentor and father figure; known affectionately on campus as "Prof Edwards," he used music to develop lasting relationships with his students; and WHEREAS, A man of strength, discipline, and compassion, he gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, dedication, and wise counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and WHEREAS, He was beloved by students and colleagues alike, and he will long be remembered for his generous spirit and his many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of George Edwards; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of George Edwards.
