55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Prairie View in mourning the loss of George Edwards,
77 who died May 28, 2009, at the age of 60; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, George Edwards
99 was widely admired across the nation for his direction of the
1010 acclaimed Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm Band; and
1111 WHEREAS, Mr. Edwards joined the faculty at Prairie View A&M
1212 University in 1978; under his leadership, the Marching Storm Band
1313 came to be considered one of the most dynamic bands in the world
1414 for its unmatched musicianship and its stirring drum line; and
1515 WHEREAS, The band had numerous memorable performances
1616 under the direction of Mr. Edwards, including marching in
1717 President George W. Bush's Presidential Inaugural Parade and the
1818 2009 Tournament of Roses Association Rose Parade in Pasadena,
1919 California; and
2020 WHEREAS, In addition to nurturing the musical talent of
2121 countless student performers over the course of more than 30
2222 years, Mr. Edwards acted as a mentor and father figure; known
2323 affectionately on campus as "Prof Edwards," he used music to
2424 develop lasting relationships with his students; and
2525 WHEREAS, A man of strength, discipline, and compassion, he
2626 gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, dedication, and wise
2727 counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
2828 WHEREAS, He was beloved by students and colleagues alike,
2929 and he will long be remembered for his generous spirit and his
3030 many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3232 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3333 family and friends of George Edwards; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3535 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3636 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
3737 memory of George Edwards.
