5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
6	6	citizens of Prairie View in mourning the loss of George Edwards,
7	7	who died May 28, 2009, at the age of 60; and
8	8	WHEREAS, A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, George Edwards
9	9	was widely admired across the nation for his direction of the
10	10	acclaimed Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm Band; and
11	11	WHEREAS, Mr. Edwards joined the faculty at Prairie View A&M
12	12	University in 1978; under his leadership, the Marching Storm Band
13	13	came to be considered one of the most dynamic bands in the world
14	14	for its unmatched musicianship and its stirring drum line; and
15	15	WHEREAS, The band had numerous memorable performances
16	16	under the direction of Mr. Edwards, including marching in
17	17	President George W. Bush's Presidential Inaugural Parade and the
18	18	2009 Tournament of Roses Association Rose Parade in Pasadena,
19	19	California; and
20	20	WHEREAS, In addition to nurturing the musical talent of
21	21	countless student performers over the course of more than 30
22	22	years, Mr. Edwards acted as a mentor and father figure; known
23	23	affectionately on campus as "Prof Edwards," he used music to
24	24	develop lasting relationships with his students; and
25	25	WHEREAS, A man of strength, discipline, and compassion, he
26	26	gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, dedication, and wise
27	27	counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
28	28	WHEREAS, He was beloved by students and colleagues alike,
29	29	and he will long be remembered for his generous spirit and his
30	30	many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
31	31	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
32	32	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
33	33	family and friends of George Edwards; and, be it further
34	34	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
35	35	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
36	36	Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
37	37	memory of George Edwards.
