55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Dallas in mourning the loss of the Honorable Leonard
77 E. Hoffman, Jr., who died May 22, 2009, at the age of 89; and
88 WHEREAS, Leonard Hoffman was born in Little Rock,
99 Arkansas, and moved with his family to Tyler, where he graduated
1010 from high school; he attended Tyler Junior College and studied
1111 law at The University of Texas in Austin before serving his
1212 country during World War II for almost four years in the United
1313 States Army; and
1414 WHEREAS, After his military service, Leonard Hoffman
1515 returned to The University of Texas at Austin and earned his law
1616 degree in 1947; he was in private practice for 22 years in Dallas
1717 before being elected judge of the 160th District Court, where he
1818 served from 1971 through 1987; and
1919 WHEREAS, Mr. Hoffman was dedicated to his work in the legal
2020 profession; he had a rewarding 55-year career as a lawyer, a
2121 judge, an arbitrator, and a mediator, but he was most proud of his
2222 role in integrating the Dallas Bar Association in 1963;
2323 professional honors he received include the Justice Emeritus
2424 award from the National Conference of Metropolitan Courts; and
2525 WHEREAS, He was a Mason, a member of the Oak Cliff Lions
2626 Club, a leader of the Circle 10 Council of the Boy Scouts of
2727 America, an officer and director of the Mental Health Association
2828 of Dallas County, and head of the local chapter of the Society of
2929 Mayflower Descendants; he was a founder of and an active leader
3030 in the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd; and
3131 WHEREAS, A kind and highly esteemed gentleman, Leonard
3232 Hoffman, Jr., was renowned for his candor and sincerity and
3333 regarded by his colleagues as the ultimate lawyer; and
3434 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
3535 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
3636 forever by his family and his many friends; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3838 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3939 family of the Honorable Leonard E. Hoffman, Jr.: his wife, Clara
4040 Graeber Hoffman; his sons, Leonard Hoffman III and Paul Hoffman;
4141 his daughters, Gretchen Vohsing and Sally Hurd; and his nine
4242 grandchildren; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4444 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4545 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4646 memory of the Honorable Leonard E. Hoffman, Jr.
