11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 114
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize February 17 and 18, 2009, as El Paso Days at the State
44 Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Located in the westernmost tip of the state, the
66 City of El Paso combines a modern metropolis with the charm born
77 of its Spanish origins; the area was named El Paso by the Spanish
88 conquistador Don Juan de Onate because of the shallow place in
99 the river where the colonists crossed en route to Santa Fe, New
1010 Mexico; and
1111 WHEREAS, The arrival of the railroads in 1881 ushered in an
1212 era of prosperity, and El Paso became a flourishing frontier
1313 community that has developed into a significant industrial,
1414 commercial, and transportation city; and
1515 WHEREAS, Today, semitrailers, trains, and planes transport
1616 manufactured goods through the border cities at the Pass, just as
1717 Spanish traders did in the 16th century when they guided ox-drawn
1818 carts along the Camino Real from Mexico City to Santa Fe; and
1919 WHEREAS, With a population of nearly three-quarters of a
2020 million people, El Paso is the state's sixth-largest city and the
2121 nation's 22nd-largest; the largest American city on the
2222 2,000-mile United States-Mexico border, it lies across the Rio
2323 Grande from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico's fifth-largest city, which
2424 has a population of over a million people; and
2525 WHEREAS, Nearby Fort Bliss, which celebrated its 160th
2626 anniversary in 2008, is immersed in the biggest transformation in
2727 its history; its population is projected to increase 300 percent
2828 by 2012, and $5 billion is being invested in construction for
2929 new, top-of-the-line facilities for the incoming personnel and
3030 their families; and
3131 WHEREAS, El Paso is a vibrant, bilingual community, and
3232 many of its residents are fluent in Spanish; its residents enjoy
3333 a thriving fine arts community, exemplary educational
3434 institutions, and many cultural and historical resources and
3535 museums; and
3636 WHEREAS, El Paso Days at the State Capitol provide an
3737 opportunity for friends and families to honor El Paso and its
3838 rich heritage, which today is enjoyed by residents and
3939 vacationers of all ages; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4141 Legislature, hereby recognize February 17 and 18, 2009, as El
4242 Paso Days at the State Capitol and join the citizens of this
4343 historical and vibrant region in paying tribute to this wonderful
4444 city; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
4646 memento of this special occasion.
