2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize February 17 and 18, 2009, as El Paso Days at the State |
---|
4 | 4 | | Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Located in the westernmost tip of the state, the |
---|
6 | 6 | | City of El Paso combines a modern metropolis with the charm born |
---|
7 | 7 | | of its Spanish origins; the area was named El Paso by the Spanish |
---|
8 | 8 | | conquistador Don Juan de Onate because of the shallow place in |
---|
9 | 9 | | the river where the colonists crossed en route to Santa Fe, New |
---|
10 | 10 | | Mexico; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The arrival of the railroads in 1881 ushered in an |
---|
12 | 12 | | era of prosperity, and El Paso became a flourishing frontier |
---|
13 | 13 | | community that has developed into a significant industrial, |
---|
14 | 14 | | commercial, and transportation city; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Today, semitrailers, trains, and planes transport |
---|
16 | 16 | | manufactured goods through the border cities at the Pass, just as |
---|
17 | 17 | | Spanish traders did in the 16th century when they guided ox-drawn |
---|
18 | 18 | | carts along the Camino Real from Mexico City to Santa Fe; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, With a population of nearly three-quarters of a |
---|
20 | 20 | | million people, El Paso is the state's sixth-largest city and the |
---|
21 | 21 | | nation's 22nd-largest; the largest American city on the |
---|
22 | 22 | | 2,000-mile United States-Mexico border, it lies across the Rio |
---|
23 | 23 | | Grande from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico's fifth-largest city, which |
---|
24 | 24 | | has a population of over a million people; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Nearby Fort Bliss, which celebrated its 160th |
---|
26 | 26 | | anniversary in 2008, is immersed in the biggest transformation in |
---|
27 | 27 | | its history; its population is projected to increase 300 percent |
---|
28 | 28 | | by 2012, and $5 billion is being invested in construction for |
---|
29 | 29 | | new, top-of-the-line facilities for the incoming personnel and |
---|
30 | 30 | | their families; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, El Paso is a vibrant, bilingual community, and |
---|
32 | 32 | | many of its residents are fluent in Spanish; its residents enjoy |
---|
33 | 33 | | a thriving fine arts community, exemplary educational |
---|
34 | 34 | | institutions, and many cultural and historical resources and |
---|
35 | 35 | | museums; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, El Paso Days at the State Capitol provide an |
---|
37 | 37 | | opportunity for friends and families to honor El Paso and its |
---|
38 | 38 | | rich heritage, which today is enjoyed by residents and |
---|
39 | 39 | | vacationers of all ages; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 17 and 18, 2009, as El |
---|
42 | 42 | | Paso Days at the State Capitol and join the citizens of this |
---|
43 | 43 | | historical and vibrant region in paying tribute to this wonderful |
---|
44 | 44 | | city; and, be it further |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a |
---|
46 | 46 | | memento of this special occasion. |
