| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the faculty, staff, and students of The Texas A&M University |

| 4 | 4 | | System in recognizing February 6, 2009, as Dr. Dan Jones Day; and |

| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dan Jones is being recognized for his |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | inauguration as the President of Texas A&M University--Commerce; |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jones graduated with highest honors from The |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor of journalism |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | degree in Magazine Journalism and a bachelor of arts degree in |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | English; he earned a master's degree in English from Rice |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | University in 1978 and another master's degree in American |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Studies in 1982 from the University of Iowa, where he also |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | completed his doctorate in American Studies in 1982; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jones began his career as an instructor of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | English at Casper College in Casper, Wyoming; he went on to serve |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | in several capacities at the University of Houston-Downtown, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | including Dean of University College, Interim Dean of Student |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Affairs, Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Social |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Sciences, and Acting Chair in the Department of English; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jones then served as Provost and Vice |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | President for Academic Affairs at Texas A&M International |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | University in Laredo from 2003 through 2008; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jones was a charter member of Phi Kappa Phi at |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the University of Houston-Downtown and at Texas A&M |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | International University, where he was also given the Service |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Excellence Award and the Student Government Association Award |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | for Outstanding Faculty Member; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, His professional memberships include the American |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Studies Association, the Far West Popular Culture Association, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | the Popular Culture Association, and Phi Beta Kappa; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jones has published several articles and made |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | numerous presentations dealing with higher education and popular |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | culture, and he has demonstrated excellent qualifications for |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | his new position as President of Texas A&M University--Commerce; |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 6, 2009, as Dr. Dan Jones |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Day and urge all students, faculty members, and staff of Texas |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | A&M University--Commerce to congratulate Dr. Jones on an |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | outstanding career with the university and express sincere |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | appreciation to him for his unwavering dedication and service to |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | higher education in the State of Texas; and, be it further |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
