11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 139
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join the citizens of Waller County in celebrating February 10,
44 2009, as Waller County Day at the State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Created by the Texas Legislature in 1873 from
66 sections of Austin and Grimes Counties, Waller County is named
77 for Edwin Waller, a signatory of the Texas Declaration of
88 Independence and the City of Austin's first mayor; and
99 WHEREAS, Waller County's early settlers were members of
1010 Stephen F. Austin's original Texas colony; the county played a
1111 role in the Texas Revolution, serving as the site of an
1212 encampment for the army of General Sam Houston; and
1313 WHEREAS, Prior to the discovery of oil in the 1930s, the
1414 economy of Waller County was driven largely by agriculture, with
1515 cotton being the foremost crop; a diverse population of African
1616 Americans, Italians, Irish, Germans, Poles, and Czechs came to
1717 the region in the late 18th century and early 19th century;
1818 recently, the county has experienced significant population
1919 growth; and
2020 WHEREAS, The citizens of Waller County are rightly proud of
2121 its distinguished history and the many contributions its people
2222 have made to the growth and progress of our state; now,
2323 therefore, be it
2424 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
2525 Legislature, hereby extend a warm welcome to the citizens of
2626 Waller County who have traveled to the Capitol for this
2727 commemoration and recognize February 10, 2009, as Waller County
2828 Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further
2929 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3030 the people of Waller County as an expression of esteem from the
3131 Texas Senate.
