| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the citizens of Waller County in celebrating February 10, |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | 2009, as Waller County Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Created by the Texas Legislature in 1873 from |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | sections of Austin and Grimes Counties, Waller County is named |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | for Edwin Waller, a signatory of the Texas Declaration of |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Independence and the City of Austin's first mayor; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Waller County's early settlers were members of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Stephen F. Austin's original Texas colony; the county played a |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | role in the Texas Revolution, serving as the site of an |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | encampment for the army of General Sam Houston; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Prior to the discovery of oil in the 1930s, the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | economy of Waller County was driven largely by agriculture, with |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | cotton being the foremost crop; a diverse population of African |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Americans, Italians, Irish, Germans, Poles, and Czechs came to |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the region in the late 18th century and early 19th century; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | recently, the county has experienced significant population |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | growth; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Waller County are rightly proud of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | its distinguished history and the many contributions its people |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | have made to the growth and progress of our state; now, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Legislature, hereby extend a warm welcome to the citizens of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Waller County who have traveled to the Capitol for this |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | commemoration and recognize February 10, 2009, as Waller County |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the people of Waller County as an expression of esteem from the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Texas Senate. |
