| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the citizens of Victoria County who have come to the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | State Capitol to celebrate Victoria County Day; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Victoria County is located in southeastern Texas |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | on the Coastal Plain; with its abundant natural grasslands and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | subtropical climate allowing for year-round grazing, the county |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | became a leader in the development of the Texas cattle industry; |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, As knowledge about cultivating prairie soils |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | grew, commercial farming of diverse crops developed in the area |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | in the late 1890s, and the production of corn and cotton grew in |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | importance; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The area was first colonized by Martin de Leon in |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | 1824, with the establishment of the settlement named for the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | first president of Mexico, Don Guadalupe Victoria; Victoria |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | County was one of the original 23 counties established by the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | First Congress of the Republic of Texas on March 17, 1836; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Located in the heart of the Golden Crescent, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Victoria is the county's largest city and is the county seat; |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | since its humble beginnings as a settlement in the early 1800s, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the City of Victoria has grown to be home to over 85,000 |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | residents; it is the cultural, historic, and economic hub for |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | nearby communities and the surrounding counties; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Victoria County Day is an excellent opportunity |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | for the legislature to pay tribute to the unique history and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | qualities of Victoria County and the many contributions it has |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | made to our state; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby extend a warm welcome to representatives |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | from Victoria County and recognize February 11, 2009, as Victoria |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | County Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | the citizens of Victoria County as an expression of highest |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | regard from the Texas Senate. |
