11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 147
22 WHEREAS, Residents of Grayson County are gathering in
33 Austin on February 10, 2009, to celebrate Grayson County Day at
44 the State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, In partnership with Collin and Denton Counties,
66 Grayson County is participating in the first Tri-County Event at
77 the State Capitol, which is being held to demonstrate regional
88 cooperation in the North Texas area; and
99 WHEREAS, Grayson County is named for Peter W. Grayson,
1010 attorney general of the Republic of Texas; it was formed on March
1111 17, 1846, by the 1st Texas Legislature, which also specified that
1212 the county seat be named for Sidney Sherman, a leader at the
1313 Battle of San Jacinto; as a result, the town of Sherman holds the
1414 distinction of being one of the few Texas communities named by an
1515 act of the legislature; and
1616 WHEREAS, In 1872, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad
1717 built a rail line to Sherman, and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas
1818 Railroad reached Denison; these developments brought about a
1919 period of rapid growth and a dramatic expansion in the county's
2020 population; new settlements emerged, and today towns in the
2121 county include Whitesboro, Pottsboro, Bells, Whitewright, Tom
2222 Bean, Van Alstyne, Howe, Gunter, Dorchester, Tioga,
2323 Collinsville, Gordonville, Sadler, and Southmayd; the economic
2424 development that took place in the late 1800s transformed the
2525 county into a milling and market center for surrounding areas,
2626 and in 1891, the world's largest cottonseed oil mill was
2727 established in Sherman; and
2828 WHEREAS, In more recent times, the local economy has
2929 diversified to include a wide range of industries and other
3030 businesses; the county is home to such commercial giants as
3131 Tyson, Ruiz Foods, Sunny Delight Beverage Company, MEMC, Emerson
3232 Process Management, Folgers Coffee Company, Terex, Cigna,
3333 Trailblazer Healthcare Services, Black and Decker Kwikset, Texas
3434 Instruments, and Progress Rail Services, a division of
3535 Caterpillar; agribusiness also continues to thrive, with wheat,
3636 corn, and hay as major crops; and
3737 WHEREAS, Sherman, once called the Athens of Texas, is home
3838 to Austin College, and the county also offers other first-rate
3939 educational facilities and resources through its public school
4040 system and Grayson County College; and
4141 WHEREAS, Outdoor sports enthusiasts come to Grayson County
4242 to participate in the many activities offered around Lake Texoma,
4343 one of the world's largest reservoirs; in Denison, the birthplace
4444 of Dwight D. Eisenhower, visitors and residents alike enjoy the
4545 Eisenhower Birthplace State Historical Site as well as
4646 Eisenhower State Park; and
4747 WHEREAS, Rich in heritage and bountiful in resources,
4848 Grayson County is a major contributor to the greatness of this
4949 state and a source of tremendous pride for its residents; now,
5050 therefore, be it
5151 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
5252 Legislature, hereby recognize February 10, 2009, as Grayson
5353 County Day at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the
5454 members of the visiting delegation on this noteworthy occasion;
5555 and, be it further
5656 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5757 the citizens of Grayson County as an expression of esteem from
5858 the Texas Senate.
