1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 147
2	2	WHEREAS, Residents of Grayson County are gathering in
3	3	Austin on February 10, 2009, to celebrate Grayson County Day at
4	4	the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, In partnership with Collin and Denton Counties,
6	6	Grayson County is participating in the first Tri-County Event at
7	7	the State Capitol, which is being held to demonstrate regional
8	8	cooperation in the North Texas area; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Grayson County is named for Peter W. Grayson,
10	10	attorney general of the Republic of Texas; it was formed on March
11	11	17, 1846, by the 1st Texas Legislature, which also specified that
12	12	the county seat be named for Sidney Sherman, a leader at the
13	13	Battle of San Jacinto; as a result, the town of Sherman holds the
14	14	distinction of being one of the few Texas communities named by an
15	15	act of the legislature; and
16	16	WHEREAS, In 1872, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad
17	17	built a rail line to Sherman, and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas
18	18	Railroad reached Denison; these developments brought about a
19	19	period of rapid growth and a dramatic expansion in the county's
20	20	population; new settlements emerged, and today towns in the
21	21	county include Whitesboro, Pottsboro, Bells, Whitewright, Tom
22	22	Bean, Van Alstyne, Howe, Gunter, Dorchester, Tioga,
23	23	Collinsville, Gordonville, Sadler, and Southmayd; the economic
24	24	development that took place in the late 1800s transformed the
25	25	county into a milling and market center for surrounding areas,
26	26	and in 1891, the world's largest cottonseed oil mill was
27	27	established in Sherman; and
28	28	WHEREAS, In more recent times, the local economy has
29	29	diversified to include a wide range of industries and other
30	30	businesses; the county is home to such commercial giants as
31	31	Tyson, Ruiz Foods, Sunny Delight Beverage Company, MEMC, Emerson
32	32	Process Management, Folgers Coffee Company, Terex, Cigna,
33	33	Trailblazer Healthcare Services, Black and Decker Kwikset, Texas
34	34	Instruments, and Progress Rail Services, a division of
35	35	Caterpillar; agribusiness also continues to thrive, with wheat,
36	36	corn, and hay as major crops; and
37	37	WHEREAS, Sherman, once called the Athens of Texas, is home
38	38	to Austin College, and the county also offers other first-rate
39	39	educational facilities and resources through its public school
40	40	system and Grayson County College; and
41	41	WHEREAS, Outdoor sports enthusiasts come to Grayson County
42	42	to participate in the many activities offered around Lake Texoma,
43	43	one of the world's largest reservoirs; in Denison, the birthplace
44	44	of Dwight D. Eisenhower, visitors and residents alike enjoy the
45	45	Eisenhower Birthplace State Historical Site as well as
46	46	Eisenhower State Park; and
47	47	WHEREAS, Rich in heritage and bountiful in resources,
48	48	Grayson County is a major contributor to the greatness of this
49	49	state and a source of tremendous pride for its residents; now,
50	50	therefore, be it
51	51	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
52	52	Legislature, hereby recognize February 10, 2009, as Grayson
53	53	County Day at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the
54	54	members of the visiting delegation on this noteworthy occasion;
55	55	and, be it further
56	56	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
57	57	the citizens of Grayson County as an expression of esteem from
58	58	the Texas Senate.
