| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join community leaders of Edwards County and citizens across the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | state in celebrating Edwards County Day at the State Capitol on |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | February 9, 2009; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Edwards County is located in southwest Texas east |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | of the Big Bend country and 100 miles west of San Antonio; the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | county encompasses 2,120 square miles of the Edwards Plateau and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | has more than 15 natural springs that flow year-round; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Named for Hayden Edwards, one of the first |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | American settlers of Nacogdoches, the county was once home to the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Lipan Apache; Spanish missionaries established the mission of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz in 1762 to Christianize the native |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | population but were otherwise unable to settle the area; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Early settlers discovered that the area offered |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | an ample natural food supply for sheep and Angora goats; ranching |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | became the dominant industry, and to this day the county is a top |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | producer of mohair, with the town of Rocksprings calling itself |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the "Top-o-the-World" in mohair production; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Edwards County celebrates the wool and mohair |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | industry every year in May at the Top-o-the-World festival, and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the annual Fourth of July rodeo and parade attracts many |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | visitors; the county is also home to the impressive Devil's |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Sinkhole, with its 150-foot sheer walls and population of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Edwards County are rightly proud |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | of its distinguished history and the many contributions its |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | people have made to the growth and progress of our state; now, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 9, 2009, as Edwards |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | County Day and extend to the county's citizens a heartfelt |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | welcome to the State Capitol; and, be it further |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

| 35 | 35 | | them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
