2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | join the citizens and community leaders of Pecos County in |
---|
4 | 4 | | celebrating Pecos County Day at the State Capitol on February 9, |
---|
5 | 5 | | 2009; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1871, Pecos County covers an area |
---|
7 | 7 | | of more than 4,700 square miles in southwest Texas and has some |
---|
8 | 8 | | 17,000 residents; it is the second-largest county in the state |
---|
9 | 9 | | and is named for the Pecos River, which flows along its northern |
---|
10 | 10 | | boundary; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Pecos County's historical importance dates back |
---|
12 | 12 | | into prehistory; archeological excavations at Squawteat Peak |
---|
13 | 13 | | have revealed a large prehistoric camp with numerous artifacts |
---|
14 | 14 | | and signs of human occupation, and archeological finds along |
---|
15 | 15 | | Tunas Creek include a burial site, pictographs, and artifacts; |
---|
16 | 16 | | and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Traders on the Chihuahua Trail passed through the |
---|
18 | 18 | | area by Comanche Springs about 1840; the first permanent |
---|
19 | 19 | | settlement was Fort Stockton, a United States Army outpost |
---|
20 | 20 | | established in 1859; the nearby town of St. Gall became a supply |
---|
21 | 21 | | center for the army, mail stages, and wagon trains and was later |
---|
22 | 22 | | renamed Fort Stockton and became the county seat; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Communities grew rapidly after the construction |
---|
24 | 24 | | of the railroad across the county in 1913; irrigation projects |
---|
25 | 25 | | boosted agricultural production, and hundreds of acres were |
---|
26 | 26 | | planted with cotton and sorghum; since the discovery of oil in |
---|
27 | 27 | | the Yates field in 1927, oil and gas production has dominated the |
---|
28 | 28 | | local economy, but the county is also known for its production of |
---|
29 | 29 | | sheep, goats, cattle, and hogs and the cultivation of onions, |
---|
30 | 30 | | peppers, melons, and pecans; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Pecos County can take pride in the |
---|
32 | 32 | | important contributions their county has made in the history and |
---|
33 | 33 | | development of this state; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby extend a warm welcome to the representatives |
---|
36 | 36 | | from Pecos County and recognize February 9, 2009, as Pecos County |
---|
37 | 37 | | Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a |
---|
39 | 39 | | memento of this special day. |
