11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 151
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join the citizens and community leaders of Pecos County in
44 celebrating Pecos County Day at the State Capitol on February 9,
55 2009; and
66 WHEREAS, Established in 1871, Pecos County covers an area
77 of more than 4,700 square miles in southwest Texas and has some
88 17,000 residents; it is the second-largest county in the state
99 and is named for the Pecos River, which flows along its northern
1010 boundary; and
1111 WHEREAS, Pecos County's historical importance dates back
1212 into prehistory; archeological excavations at Squawteat Peak
1313 have revealed a large prehistoric camp with numerous artifacts
1414 and signs of human occupation, and archeological finds along
1515 Tunas Creek include a burial site, pictographs, and artifacts;
1616 and
1717 WHEREAS, Traders on the Chihuahua Trail passed through the
1818 area by Comanche Springs about 1840; the first permanent
1919 settlement was Fort Stockton, a United States Army outpost
2020 established in 1859; the nearby town of St. Gall became a supply
2121 center for the army, mail stages, and wagon trains and was later
2222 renamed Fort Stockton and became the county seat; and
2323 WHEREAS, Communities grew rapidly after the construction
2424 of the railroad across the county in 1913; irrigation projects
2525 boosted agricultural production, and hundreds of acres were
2626 planted with cotton and sorghum; since the discovery of oil in
2727 the Yates field in 1927, oil and gas production has dominated the
2828 local economy, but the county is also known for its production of
2929 sheep, goats, cattle, and hogs and the cultivation of onions,
3030 peppers, melons, and pecans; and
3131 WHEREAS, Residents of Pecos County can take pride in the
3232 important contributions their county has made in the history and
3333 development of this state; now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3535 Legislature, hereby extend a warm welcome to the representatives
3636 from Pecos County and recognize February 9, 2009, as Pecos County
3737 Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further
3838 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
3939 memento of this special day.
