11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 153
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join citizens across the state in observing February 10, 2009, as
44 LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day at the State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day is being organized
66 by the Lance Armstrong Foundation to unite people affected by
77 cancer, and to raise awareness of the risks presented by this
88 deadly disease through education, prevention, and screening and
99 early detection efforts; and
1010 WHEREAS, According to estimates from the Centers for
1111 Disease Control and Prevention, more than 96,000 cases of cancer
1212 were diagnosed in Texas in 2008; cancer costs Texans
1313 approximately $30 billion a year in direct and indirect costs;
1414 and
1515 WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death among Texas
1616 women between the ages of 35 and 74, and 50 percent of Texas men
1717 will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime; and
1818 WHEREAS, LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day exemplifies the
1919 spirit and strength of people affected by cancer throughout
2020 Texas; now, therefore, be it
2121 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
2222 Legislature, hereby commend the Lance Armstrong Foundation on
2323 its exceptional efforts to stem the tide of cancer and call upon
2424 all Texans to observe February 10, 2009, as LIVESTRONG Texas
2525 Advocacy Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further
2626 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2727 the foundation as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
