| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join citizens across the state in observing February 10, 2009, as |

| 4 | 4 | | LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day is being organized |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | by the Lance Armstrong Foundation to unite people affected by |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | cancer, and to raise awareness of the risks presented by this |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | deadly disease through education, prevention, and screening and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | early detection efforts; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, According to estimates from the Centers for |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Disease Control and Prevention, more than 96,000 cases of cancer |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | were diagnosed in Texas in 2008; cancer costs Texans |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | approximately $30 billion a year in direct and indirect costs; |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death among Texas |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | women between the ages of 35 and 74, and 50 percent of Texas men |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day exemplifies the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | spirit and strength of people affected by cancer throughout |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Texas; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Lance Armstrong Foundation on |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | its exceptional efforts to stem the tide of cancer and call upon |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | all Texans to observe February 10, 2009, as LIVESTRONG Texas |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Advocacy Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further |

| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
