2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Citizens of Hidalgo County are gathering at the |

3 | 3 | | State Capitol to celebrate Hidalgo County Day on February 10, |
---|
4 | 4 | | 2009; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Hidalgo County is an area rich in history, which |
---|
6 | 6 | | continues to shape this growing mix of urban and rural |
---|
7 | 7 | | landscapes; the county is home to more than 750,000 people, six |
---|
8 | 8 | | international bridges, and a thriving economy anchored by the |
---|
9 | 9 | | health care, retail, trade, and tourism industries; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, This gateway to the United States was first |
---|
11 | 11 | | settled by the Coahuiltecans, the Karankawa, the Lipan Apaches, |
---|
12 | 12 | | and the Comanche; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The first Spanish visitors, including Jose de |
---|
14 | 14 | | Escandon, arrived in the 17th century, establishing settlements |
---|
15 | 15 | | along the Rio Grande; the Spanish government issued land grants |
---|
16 | 16 | | leading to the creation of many cattle ranches, which still |
---|
17 | 17 | | remain an integral part of life in Hidalgo County today; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, After the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848, |
---|
19 | 19 | | the region became part of the United States; established in 1852, |
---|
20 | 20 | | Hidalgo County was named for Miguel Hildago y Costilla, an |
---|
21 | 21 | | advocate for Mexican independence; in the early 20th century, the |
---|
22 | 22 | | town of Chapin was renamed Edinburg and made county seat; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The arrival of the railway in 1904 helped |
---|
24 | 24 | | introduce large-scale farming in the county, particularly of |
---|
25 | 25 | | citrus, cotton, corn, and sugarcane; with the establishment in |
---|
26 | 26 | | 1924 of a regional Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in |
---|
27 | 27 | | Weslaco, the towns along Highway 83 began to thrive, and it came |
---|
28 | 28 | | to be described as "the longest main street in the world"; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, While farming and ranching remain important to |
---|
30 | 30 | | the county, the discovery of oil in 1934 increased the region's |
---|
31 | 31 | | prosperity; today the county is one of the most vibrant and |
---|
32 | 32 | | fastest-growing regions of Texas, ripe with talented individuals |
---|
33 | 33 | | dedicated to transforming it into a top place to live, work, and |
---|
34 | 34 | | play; the county is considered a major port of entry into the |
---|
35 | 35 | | United States, and the shipment of goods from Mexico is an |
---|
36 | 36 | | essential part of the county's economy; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, This economic prosperity is a product of the hard |
---|
38 | 38 | | work of its citizens, who are well served by the University of |
---|
39 | 39 | | Texas--Pan American in Edinburg and South Texas College; the |
---|
40 | 40 | | county also pays tribute to its heritage and learns of others' |
---|
41 | 41 | | with several cultural venues and events, including the Museum for |
---|
42 | 42 | | South Texas History, the International Museum of Art and Science, |
---|
43 | 43 | | the Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, and an up-and-coming |
---|
44 | 44 | | art and entertainment district in the City of McAllen; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike enjoy the many |
---|
46 | 46 | | attractions of Hidalgo County; the Texas Citrus Fiesta in Mission |
---|
47 | 47 | | every winter features a carnival and the Parade of Oranges; in |
---|
48 | 48 | | Weslaco, the Rio Grande Valley Onion Festival in April includes |
---|
49 | 49 | | food booths, entertainment, and onion recipe contests; the Rio |
---|
50 | 50 | | Grande Valley Livestock Show in Mercedes draws an average |
---|
51 | 51 | | attendance of 160,000 every March; and |
---|
52 | 52 | | WHEREAS, Shoppers frequent the Delta Mercado, an outdoor |
---|
53 | 53 | | and indoor artisan market in the Delta Region which opened in |
---|
54 | 54 | | 2008, and other major retail venues across the county; visitors |
---|
55 | 55 | | from around the world make pilgrimages to San Juan to visit the |
---|
56 | 56 | | Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle-National Shrine; and |
---|
57 | 57 | | with nearly 400 species of birds, the Santa Ana National Wildlife |
---|
58 | 58 | | Refuge near Alamo is an international destination for birders; |
---|

---|
60 | 60 | | WHEREAS, Led by County Judge J. D. Salinas and County |
---|
61 | 61 | | Commissioners Sylvia S. Handy, Hector "Tito" Palacios, Joe M. |

62 | 62 | | Flores, and Oscar L. Garza, Jr., the residents of this dynamic |
---|
63 | 63 | | region of the Lone Star State have much to be proud of, as they |

64 | 64 | | celebrate the past and work to build a bright and prosperous |

65 | 65 | | future; now, therefore, be it |

66 | 66 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |

67 | 67 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 10, 2009, as Hidalgo |
