1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 161
2	2	WHEREAS, On February 11, 2009, proud residents, business
3	3	people, and friends of the Richardson community are meeting at
4	4	the State Capitol for Richardson's Telecom Corridor Legislative
5	5	Day; and
6	6	WHEREAS, Located just north of Dallas in both Collin and
7	7	Dallas Counties, Richardson is home to almost 100,000 people and
8	8	a high concentration of technology and telecommunications firms,
9	9	as well as financial services firms and corporate headquarters,
10	10	making it the second largest employment center in North Texas;
11	11	and
12	12	WHEREAS, The collaboration between business and government
13	13	that characterizes the region is due in large part to the
14	14	committed efforts of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce and the
15	15	City of Richardson; assistance from the state's Texas Enterprise
16	16	Fund and Emerging Technology Fund has also greatly contributed to
17	17	local economic development initiatives; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Richardson has been among the most successful
19	19	cities in the nation at promoting economic development,
20	20	attracting such internationally renowned companies as Cisco
21	21	Systems, AT&T, Verizon, Fujitsu Network Communications, Samsung
22	22	Telecommunications America, Hewlett-Packard, Rockwell Collins,
23	23	Boeing, and Texas Instruments; at the same time, the city has
24	24	spawned exciting new companies in the fields of
25	25	telecommunications, nanotechnology, life sciences, software,
26	26	and semiconductors, garnering over $2 billion in venture capital
27	27	investments; in 2006, the city received the prestigious
28	28	"Technology-Led Development Award" from the International
29	29	Economic Development Council; and
30	30	WHEREAS, Richardson's high quality of life makes it an
31	31	ideal home to modern businesses; in addition to some of the
32	32	state's best schools and colleges, the city boasts more than
33	33	1,000 acres of park space, and the nationally known Wildflower
34	34	Arts and Music Festival and Cottonwood Art Festival are apt
35	35	reflections of the area's rich cultural opportunities; and
36	36	WHEREAS, Richardson is also home to The University of Texas
37	37	at Dallas, a dynamic public research institution on the cutting
38	38	edge of science, technology, and medicine; the site of the new
39	39	$85 million Natural Science and Engineering Research Building,
40	40	the university is known for its outstanding school of engineering
41	41	and computer science as well as for its exceptional faculty and
42	42	staff; and
43	43	WHEREAS, The Richardson Chamber of Commerce and the area's
44	44	technology leadership have made Richardson's Telecom Corridor
45	45	area one of the showpieces of modern Texas, and they can take
46	46	great pride in their many accomplishments as they look forward to
47	47	the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead; now, therefore,
48	48	be it
49	49	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
50	50	Legislature, hereby recognize February 11, 2009, as Richardson's
51	51	Telecom Corridor Legislative Day and extend a warm welcome to the
52	52	area's business and civic leaders visiting the State Capitol.
