11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 161
22 WHEREAS, On February 11, 2009, proud residents, business
33 people, and friends of the Richardson community are meeting at
44 the State Capitol for Richardson's Telecom Corridor Legislative
55 Day; and
66 WHEREAS, Located just north of Dallas in both Collin and
77 Dallas Counties, Richardson is home to almost 100,000 people and
88 a high concentration of technology and telecommunications firms,
99 as well as financial services firms and corporate headquarters,
1010 making it the second largest employment center in North Texas;
1111 and
1212 WHEREAS, The collaboration between business and government
1313 that characterizes the region is due in large part to the
1414 committed efforts of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce and the
1515 City of Richardson; assistance from the state's Texas Enterprise
1616 Fund and Emerging Technology Fund has also greatly contributed to
1717 local economic development initiatives; and
1818 WHEREAS, Richardson has been among the most successful
1919 cities in the nation at promoting economic development,
2020 attracting such internationally renowned companies as Cisco
2121 Systems, AT&T, Verizon, Fujitsu Network Communications, Samsung
2222 Telecommunications America, Hewlett-Packard, Rockwell Collins,
2323 Boeing, and Texas Instruments; at the same time, the city has
2424 spawned exciting new companies in the fields of
2525 telecommunications, nanotechnology, life sciences, software,
2626 and semiconductors, garnering over $2 billion in venture capital
2727 investments; in 2006, the city received the prestigious
2828 "Technology-Led Development Award" from the International
2929 Economic Development Council; and
3030 WHEREAS, Richardson's high quality of life makes it an
3131 ideal home to modern businesses; in addition to some of the
3232 state's best schools and colleges, the city boasts more than
3333 1,000 acres of park space, and the nationally known Wildflower
3434 Arts and Music Festival and Cottonwood Art Festival are apt
3535 reflections of the area's rich cultural opportunities; and
3636 WHEREAS, Richardson is also home to The University of Texas
3737 at Dallas, a dynamic public research institution on the cutting
3838 edge of science, technology, and medicine; the site of the new
3939 $85 million Natural Science and Engineering Research Building,
4040 the university is known for its outstanding school of engineering
4141 and computer science as well as for its exceptional faculty and
4242 staff; and
4343 WHEREAS, The Richardson Chamber of Commerce and the area's
4444 technology leadership have made Richardson's Telecom Corridor
4545 area one of the showpieces of modern Texas, and they can take
4646 great pride in their many accomplishments as they look forward to
4747 the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead; now, therefore,
4848 be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
5050 Legislature, hereby recognize February 11, 2009, as Richardson's
5151 Telecom Corridor Legislative Day and extend a warm welcome to the
5252 area's business and civic leaders visiting the State Capitol.
