11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 170
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize February 12, 2009, as Mission Day at the Capitol and to
44 welcome the citizens of Mission who have traveled to Austin for
55 this occasion; and
66 WHEREAS, The earliest settlers of the Mission area were the
77 Native American Coahuiltecans, a name that refers to the
88 indigenous people of 200 tribes who lived on both sides of the Rio
99 Grande from the mouth of the Pecos River to the Gulf of Mexico;
1010 and
1111 WHEREAS, Over 200 years ago, the Spanish settled the vast
1212 area stretching from the Panuco River in Tampico, Mexico, to
1313 present-day Corpus Christi, Texas; in 1762, King Carlos III of
1414 Spain ordered a just and equal division of the territory, and in
1515 this process, porciones of land along the Rio Grande were
1616 established; Porciones 55 and 57 were the location of Rancho La
1717 Lomita, which became the site of the historic La Lomita Chapel;
1818 and
1919 WHEREAS, Written records indicate that the site known as La
2020 Lomita was granted to Captain Cantu of Reynosa by a Spanish grant
2121 in 1767, and the land was eventually sold to Rene Guyard, who left
2222 the land to the Missionary Oblates of Mary; the priests of the
2323 Oblate order established the La Lomita Mission in 1824, and La
2424 Lomita Chapel was built in 1865; and
2525 WHEREAS, In 1908, the Missouri Pacific Railroad
2626 established a railway station near the mission, and that same
2727 year, the City of Mission was founded; Mrs. Ann Voltz, who lived
2828 in the Madero area, suggested that the new town be named Mission
2929 after the La Lomita Mission; since 1908, the City of Mission has
3030 grown from a railroad stop to a thriving city; and
3131 WHEREAS, An orange grove had been planted by the Oblate
3232 priests, and thus the Mission area became the locale of the first
3333 citrus trees to be planted in the Rio Grande Valley; Mission was
3434 designated the Lone Star State's Home of the Grapefruit by the
3535 75th Texas Legislature; the citrus industry is a
3636 multimillion-dollar business that is celebrated annually during
3737 the Texas Citrus Fiesta; and
3838 WHEREAS, Mission was immortalized in Larry McMurtry's
3939 novel and miniseries, Lonesome Dove, and its notable residents
4040 have included the late United States Senator and Treasury
4141 Secretary Lloyd Bentsen and former United States Congressman
4242 Kika de la Garza; Mission was the childhood home of the late Coach
4343 Tom Landry; and
4444 WHEREAS, The Mission area is now known for its birding and
4545 nature study opportunities provided by the city's nearby
4646 Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, site of the headquarters of
4747 the World Birding Center; and
4848 WHEREAS, Mission will soon be the site of a new bridge
4949 across the Rio Grande; the Anzalduas Bridge will enhance
5050 cross-border trade by facilitating access to northern Mexico and
5151 is scheduled to open in October of 2009; and
5252 WHEREAS, Mission Day at the Capitol provides an
5353 opportunity to honor the city's heritage and its charm and many
5454 amenities, which are enjoyed by residents and vacationers of all
5555 ages; now, therefore, be it
5656 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
5757 Legislature, hereby join the citizens of Mission in paying
5858 tribute to their unique city and extend to them best wishes for an
5959 enjoyable Mission Day at the Capitol; and, be it further
6060 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
6161 the residents of the City of Mission as an expression of esteem
6262 from the Texas Senate.
