11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 172
22 WHEREAS, Jim Wells County Day at the State Capitol is being
33 celebrated February 12, 2009, and the Texas Senate takes great
44 pleasure in recognizing this region and its citizens who have
55 contributed to the development of the Lone Star State; and
66 WHEREAS, In the early 1500s, Alvar Nuez de Cabeza de Vaca
77 explored the area known today as Jim Wells County, and his
88 records tell of tuna or prickly pear festivals held annually by
99 his coastal Indian captors around the present-day City of Alice;
1010 and
1111 WHEREAS, Originally a part of Nueces County, Jim Wells
1212 County was created and organized by the Texas Legislature on
1313 March 11, 1911, and the City of Alice became the county seat; the
1414 county was named for a prominent political figure and land
1515 developer, James B. Wells, Jr., who was also the purchasing agent
1616 for the King Ranch; and
1717 WHEREAS, The area comprising Jim Wells County figures
1818 prominently in the early days of Texas, for the land had become a
1919 part of Texas after it gained its independence from Mexico in
2020 1836; and
2121 WHEREAS, N. G. Collins had extensive landholdings in the
2222 area before early settlers to the region arrived in 1850; the
2323 settlers brought only the barest necessities with them to build a
2424 general store and a trading post, creating the town of Collins
2525 east of where Alice is now located; the town of Collins was
2626 short-lived since the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad was
2727 built two miles west of the community when landowners refused to
2828 sell the right-of-way through the town; and
2929 WHEREAS, In 1886, a new town developed where two rail lines
3030 intersected; after several name changes, the new town of Alice,
3131 named for Alice King, began to develop economically; located at
3232 that time in the northwestern part of Nueces County, the town
3333 eventually became the largest cattle-shipping point in the
3434 world; and
3535 WHEREAS, Located in the geographical heart of South Texas,
3636 along the "Texas Tropical Trail," Alice is known as the "Hub of
3737 South Texas" due to its strategic location at the intersection of
3838 State Highway 44 and United States Highway 281; and
3939 WHEREAS, In addition to the oil business, ranching, cattle
4040 shipping, and cotton and grain production, a fine public school
4141 system, a modern hospital, and an expanding health-related
4242 service industry combine to drive the area's economy; and
4343 WHEREAS, Situated on primary United States-Mexico trade
4444 routes connecting Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley with the Port
4545 of Corpus Christi, the City of Alice and Jim Wells County are
4646 developing into a major "Hub of International Trade"; United
4747 States Highway 281 has been named in the National Highway System
4848 Designation Act of 1995 as a key link in the future I-69 NAFTA
4949 Superhighway System; and
5050 WHEREAS, Jim Wells County is a valuable agricultural area
5151 that has contributed significantly to the development of the
5252 Southwestern part of the United States; since the mid-1800s when
5353 the famous Chisholm Trail passed through the county, the cattle
5454 industry has played a major role in its economy; mesquite brush
5555 and grasses in the western part provide ideal grazing conditions
5656 for livestock, and coastal plains to the east produce coastal
5757 Bermuda and vegetables; and
5858 WHEREAS, In 1936, the first notable oil activity in the
5959 county was initiated, and the first major oil producer, The Texas
6060 Royalty Corporation and Lucy Petroleum Company One, was bought
6161 northeast of Alice; the oil rush brought many new families to Jim
6262 Wells County; and
6363 WHEREAS, The history of Jim Wells County has been carefully
6464 preserved at the South Texas Museum, which has been designated a
6565 Texas Historical Landmark; donated by the McGill family, the
6666 museum was the family's old ranch headquarters; and
6767 WHEREAS, Proud of their unique heritage, the citizens of
6868 Jim Wells County have retained the social fabric of their culture
6969 through fiestas, county fairs, rodeos, and outdoor activities
7070 such as hunting and water sports; and
7171 WHEREAS, Jim Wells County Day at the State Capitol is an
7272 appropriate occasion for the Texas Senate to recognize the
7373 residents of Jim Wells County and to commend them for their
7474 excellent accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
7575 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
7676 Legislature, hereby declare February 12, 2009, Jim Wells County
7777 Day at the State Capitol and join the citizens of Jim Wells County
7878 as they celebrate their county's many assets; and, be it further
7979 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
8080 the citizens of Jim Wells County as an expression of esteem from
8181 the Texas Senate.
