| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Dr. Sandra Braham, the recipient of the Adelante Con |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | Ganas Award for February 2009; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sandra Braham is the Chief Executive Officer |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | of the YWCA El Paso del Norte Region, the largest YWCA in the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | nation, with more than 600 employees, an annual budget of more |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | than $30 million and a $7 million foundation; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Having held this post since May of 2006, Dr. |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Braham has focused on ensuring the success of the region's |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | programs for homeless women and children, health and wellness |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | services, racial justice, leadership training, credit |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | counseling, and a host of other programs; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Braham formerly served as Associate Vice |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Provost for Undergraduate Studies and Assistant Vice President |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | for Outreach Programs at The University of Texas at El Paso, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | securing more than $18 million in federal and state grants |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | focused on low-income youth; she chaired the President's |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Advisory Committee on Diversity for three years and established a |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | freshman seminar course on diversity; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Braham has been honored with numerous awards |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | for her outstanding work; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, As a former foster care youth and the daughter of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | a schizophrenic mother, Dr. Braham truly understands the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | difficulties faced by persons from less-than-fortunate |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | backgrounds, and today she is a role model for many whose lives |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | she has touched; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas hereby |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | commend Dr. Sandra Braham for her many contributions to the City |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | of El Paso and extend to her congratulations on receiving the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Adelante Con Ganas Award; and, be it further |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
