1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 185
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize the National Association for the Advancement of
4	4	Colored People on the auspicious occasion of its centennial
5	5	anniversary; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The NAACP was founded in New York City in 1909 by a
7	7	coalition of black and white citizens fighting for social
8	8	justice; and
9	9	WHEREAS, The mission of the NAACP is to strive to ensure
10	10	the political, educational, social, and economic equality of
11	11	rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and
12	12	discrimination; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Dedicated to removing the barriers of racial
14	14	discrimination through democratic processes, the NAACP has
15	15	worked to seek enactment of federal, state, and local laws to
16	16	secure civil rights for all our nation's citizens; and
17	17	WHEREAS, The organization's efforts in supporting
18	18	anti-lynching legislation and its work to end discrimination in
19	19	the workplace through the Fair Employment Practices Committee
20	20	have served as an inspiration to many; and
21	21	WHEREAS, The NAACP also worked through the American legal
22	22	system to achieve its goals; with its Legal Defense and
23	23	Educational Fund, it played an important role in the landmark
24	24	Brown v. Board of Education case, which outlawed segregation in
25	25	public schools; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Built on the collective courage of countless
27	27	people, the NAACP has helped determine the course of American
28	28	history; from its early struggles to make itself heard in the
29	29	days of widespread lynching, to its energetic support of civil
30	30	rights legislation, to its defense of affirmative action and its
31	31	advocacy in the areas of education, health care, and economic
32	32	justice, this exceptional organization has made a difference in
33	33	the lives of innumerable people; it is truly deserving of respect
34	34	and admiration for its contributions to American life; now,
35	35	therefore, be it
36	36	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
37	37	Legislature, hereby commend the National Association for the
38	38	Advancement of Colored People for its enduring commitment to
39	39	helping our nation achieve the ideals set forth at its conception
40	40	and extend sincere congratulations to this invaluable
41	41	organization on its centennial anniversary; and, be it further
42	42	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
43	43	honor of this special occasion.
