11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 185
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the National Association for the Advancement of
44 Colored People on the auspicious occasion of its centennial
55 anniversary; and
66 WHEREAS, The NAACP was founded in New York City in 1909 by a
77 coalition of black and white citizens fighting for social
88 justice; and
99 WHEREAS, The mission of the NAACP is to strive to ensure
1010 the political, educational, social, and economic equality of
1111 rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and
1212 discrimination; and
1313 WHEREAS, Dedicated to removing the barriers of racial
1414 discrimination through democratic processes, the NAACP has
1515 worked to seek enactment of federal, state, and local laws to
1616 secure civil rights for all our nation's citizens; and
1717 WHEREAS, The organization's efforts in supporting
1818 anti-lynching legislation and its work to end discrimination in
1919 the workplace through the Fair Employment Practices Committee
2020 have served as an inspiration to many; and
2121 WHEREAS, The NAACP also worked through the American legal
2222 system to achieve its goals; with its Legal Defense and
2323 Educational Fund, it played an important role in the landmark
2424 Brown v. Board of Education case, which outlawed segregation in
2525 public schools; and
2626 WHEREAS, Built on the collective courage of countless
2727 people, the NAACP has helped determine the course of American
2828 history; from its early struggles to make itself heard in the
2929 days of widespread lynching, to its energetic support of civil
3030 rights legislation, to its defense of affirmative action and its
3131 advocacy in the areas of education, health care, and economic
3232 justice, this exceptional organization has made a difference in
3333 the lives of innumerable people; it is truly deserving of respect
3434 and admiration for its contributions to American life; now,
3535 therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3737 Legislature, hereby commend the National Association for the
3838 Advancement of Colored People for its enduring commitment to
3939 helping our nation achieve the ideals set forth at its conception
4040 and extend sincere congratulations to this invaluable
4141 organization on its centennial anniversary; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4343 honor of this special occasion.
