2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize the Fulbright American Studies Institute for Korean
4	4	Secondary School Teachers of English and to extend a warm welcome
5	5	to the Korean exchange teachers participating in this
6	6	outstanding program as they visit Texas from January 4, 2009,
7	7	through February 19, 2009; and
8	8	WHEREAS, The Fulbright American Studies Institute for
9	9	Korean Secondary School Teachers of English is one of 51
10	10	nonprofit Fulbright Commissions worldwide, whose board of
11	11	directors are Koreans and Americans representing government,
12	12	education, and the private sector; since its establishment in
13	13	Austin in 2002, the institute's professional and scholarly
14	14	exchange program has helped promote understanding between the
15	15	United States and Korea; and
16	16	WHEREAS, The Korean teachers enhance their knowledge of
17	17	American English as a Second Language teaching methodology,
18	18	techniques, and materials as well as their understanding of
19	19	American culture and society; and
20	20	WHEREAS, The Korean teachers develop relationships with
21	21	American colleagues and improve their English skills through
22	22	advanced content-based instruction and reinforcement of
23	23	language-learning strategies; and
24	24	WHEREAS, The program includes a four-week residency in
25	25	Austin, a two-week secondary school site residency in schools
26	26	around the state of Texas, and finishes with a one-week period of
27	27	reflection and integration back in Austin; and
28	28	WHEREAS, The Korean teachers will observe a variety of
29	29	secondary school classes, coteach portions of English as a second
30	30	language classes, give cultural presentations on Korea,
31	31	collaborate with teacher mentors, and observe schoolwide
32	32	activities at their host schools; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Dr. Woody Smith is the institute's program
34	34	coordinator, and Dr. Terry Simon is the academic director, while
35	35	Benn Willerman, Charles Seltzer, Dr. John Schmidt, Mimi Parris,
36	36	Karen Easterday, Emily Spurgeon, and Gail Sue Kasun are the
37	37	participating Texas International Education Consortium faculty
38	38	members; and
39	39	WHEREAS, The Korean high school exchange teachers visiting
40	40	Texas are Jongnam Bae, Jae Hong Cho, In Sook Choi, Taeju Im, Eun
41	41	Jeong Jee, Kyu Sun Kim, Young Suk Kim, Seanae Kwon, Soon Deok
42	42	Kwon, Jung Hee Lee, Kwanglok Lee, Soonchul Lee, Sujin Lee,
43	43	Kyongchul Myong, Eunhee Park, Jinhack Park, Kyung Mi Park, Mi
44	44	Young Song, Jeongwon Yang, and Tae Sung Yoon; and
45	45	WHEREAS, The Korean middle school exchange teachers are
46	46	Miyoung Cho, Younghee Choi, Young Eun Harm, Eunyoung Kang, Se
47	47	Yong Kang, Eun Seon Kim, Jungyeol Kim, Min Jin Kim, Jung Yul Ko,
48	48	Hoonam Kwon, Eun Ju Lee, Kyungmi Lee, Yu Jin Lee, Kyung Sook Park,
49	49	Hee Jung Woo, Jungin Yang, and Yunkyung Yoon; and the Korean
50	50	elementary school teachers are Jinsuk Kim and Heeyeol Park; and
51	51	WHEREAS, It is a genuine pleasure to offer these teachers
52	52	the warm hospitality of the Lone Star State, and it is sincerely
53	53	hoped that their visit is a most enjoyable one; now, therefore,
54	54	be it
55	55	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
56	56	Legislature, hereby extend a warm welcome to the Korean teachers
57	57	visiting Texas and recognize them as Honorary Texans with all
58	58	attendant rights and privileges; and, be it further
59	59	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
60	60	them as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
