11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 19
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the Fulbright American Studies Institute for Korean
44 Secondary School Teachers of English and to extend a warm welcome
55 to the Korean exchange teachers participating in this
66 outstanding program as they visit Texas from January 4, 2009,
77 through February 19, 2009; and
88 WHEREAS, The Fulbright American Studies Institute for
99 Korean Secondary School Teachers of English is one of 51
1010 nonprofit Fulbright Commissions worldwide, whose board of
1111 directors are Koreans and Americans representing government,
1212 education, and the private sector; since its establishment in
1313 Austin in 2002, the institute's professional and scholarly
1414 exchange program has helped promote understanding between the
1515 United States and Korea; and
1616 WHEREAS, The Korean teachers enhance their knowledge of
1717 American English as a Second Language teaching methodology,
1818 techniques, and materials as well as their understanding of
1919 American culture and society; and
2020 WHEREAS, The Korean teachers develop relationships with
2121 American colleagues and improve their English skills through
2222 advanced content-based instruction and reinforcement of
2323 language-learning strategies; and
2424 WHEREAS, The program includes a four-week residency in
2525 Austin, a two-week secondary school site residency in schools
2626 around the state of Texas, and finishes with a one-week period of
2727 reflection and integration back in Austin; and
2828 WHEREAS, The Korean teachers will observe a variety of
2929 secondary school classes, coteach portions of English as a second
3030 language classes, give cultural presentations on Korea,
3131 collaborate with teacher mentors, and observe schoolwide
3232 activities at their host schools; and
3333 WHEREAS, Dr. Woody Smith is the institute's program
3434 coordinator, and Dr. Terry Simon is the academic director, while
3535 Benn Willerman, Charles Seltzer, Dr. John Schmidt, Mimi Parris,
3636 Karen Easterday, Emily Spurgeon, and Gail Sue Kasun are the
3737 participating Texas International Education Consortium faculty
3838 members; and
3939 WHEREAS, The Korean high school exchange teachers visiting
4040 Texas are Jongnam Bae, Jae Hong Cho, In Sook Choi, Taeju Im, Eun
4141 Jeong Jee, Kyu Sun Kim, Young Suk Kim, Seanae Kwon, Soon Deok
4242 Kwon, Jung Hee Lee, Kwanglok Lee, Soonchul Lee, Sujin Lee,
4343 Kyongchul Myong, Eunhee Park, Jinhack Park, Kyung Mi Park, Mi
4444 Young Song, Jeongwon Yang, and Tae Sung Yoon; and
4545 WHEREAS, The Korean middle school exchange teachers are
4646 Miyoung Cho, Younghee Choi, Young Eun Harm, Eunyoung Kang, Se
4747 Yong Kang, Eun Seon Kim, Jungyeol Kim, Min Jin Kim, Jung Yul Ko,
4848 Hoonam Kwon, Eun Ju Lee, Kyungmi Lee, Yu Jin Lee, Kyung Sook Park,
4949 Hee Jung Woo, Jungin Yang, and Yunkyung Yoon; and the Korean
5050 elementary school teachers are Jinsuk Kim and Heeyeol Park; and
5151 WHEREAS, It is a genuine pleasure to offer these teachers
5252 the warm hospitality of the Lone Star State, and it is sincerely
5353 hoped that their visit is a most enjoyable one; now, therefore,
5454 be it
5555 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
5656 Legislature, hereby extend a warm welcome to the Korean teachers
5757 visiting Texas and recognize them as Honorary Texans with all
5858 attendant rights and privileges; and, be it further
5959 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
6060 them as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
