55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Captain Louie W.
77 White, who died December 27, 2008, at the age of 76; and
88 WHEREAS, Louie White was born in Mexia and moved to Austin
99 to be with his older sister; he graduated from L. C. Anderson High
1010 School and attended Huston-Tillotson College; he joined the
1111 Austin Police Department in 1959 after graduating from the Austin
1212 Police Academy; and
1313 WHEREAS, He served with distinction in the Austin Police
1414 Department for over 29 years until his retirement in 1988; in the
1515 early days of his career, he battled racism while serving as one
1616 of the department's first black officers; he persevered and
1717 became a captain and later was a leader in the department's
1818 diversity hiring initiative in the 1970s; and
1919 WHEREAS, Captain White enforced the law on Austin's streets
2020 and was a courageous and highly respected officer; in 1972, he
2121 risked his life to save a hostage, and he was awarded the
2222 department's Medal of Valor for his heroic actions; he
2323 represented the highest ideals of the law enforcement
2424 profession, and throughout his life, he dedicated his time and
2525 energy to making the department a better organization; and
2626 WHEREAS, Louie White was an exemplary gentleman who was
2727 known for his strong character and his many contributions to his
2828 community; a devout Christian, he was active in his church and
2929 was noted for his 15-year commitment to portraying Christ in "The
3030 Pilgrimage to the Cross" at the Rosewood Parks and Recreation
3131 Center; he served for 20 years on the board of the Austin chapter
3232 of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
3333 People; and
3434 WHEREAS, A man of integrity and generosity, he gave
3535 unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel
3636 will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
3737 WHEREAS, Louie White was devoted to his family, friends,
3838 and community, and he will long be remembered with affection and
3939 appreciation by all who were privileged to share in his life;
4040 now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4242 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4343 family of Captain Louie W. White: his wife, Lois J. White; his
4444 son, Louie White, Jr.; his daughters, Diana Alexander, Debra
4545 White, Patricia Hunter, and Jacqueline Michelle Howard; and his
4646 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4848 the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
4949 from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
5050 day, it do so in memory of Captain Louie W. White.
