4	4	Louie W. White
5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
6	6	citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Captain Louie W.
7	7	White, who died December 27, 2008, at the age of 76; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Louie White was born in Mexia and moved to Austin
9	9	to be with his older sister; he graduated from L. C. Anderson High
10	10	School and attended Huston-Tillotson College; he joined the
11	11	Austin Police Department in 1959 after graduating from the Austin
12	12	Police Academy; and
13	13	WHEREAS, He served with distinction in the Austin Police
14	14	Department for over 29 years until his retirement in 1988; in the
15	15	early days of his career, he battled racism while serving as one
16	16	of the department's first black officers; he persevered and
17	17	became a captain and later was a leader in the department's
18	18	diversity hiring initiative in the 1970s; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Captain White enforced the law on Austin's streets
20	20	and was a courageous and highly respected officer; in 1972, he
21	21	risked his life to save a hostage, and he was awarded the
22	22	department's Medal of Valor for his heroic actions; he
23	23	represented the highest ideals of the law enforcement
24	24	profession, and throughout his life, he dedicated his time and
25	25	energy to making the department a better organization; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Louie White was an exemplary gentleman who was
27	27	known for his strong character and his many contributions to his
28	28	community; a devout Christian, he was active in his church and
29	29	was noted for his 15-year commitment to portraying Christ in "The
30	30	Pilgrimage to the Cross" at the Rosewood Parks and Recreation
31	31	Center; he served for 20 years on the board of the Austin chapter
32	32	of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
33	33	People; and
34	34	WHEREAS, A man of integrity and generosity, he gave
35	35	unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel
36	36	will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
37	37	WHEREAS, Louie White was devoted to his family, friends,
38	38	and community, and he will long be remembered with affection and
39	39	appreciation by all who were privileged to share in his life;
40	40	now, therefore, be it
41	41	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
42	42	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
43	43	family of Captain Louie W. White: his wife, Lois J. White; his
44	44	son, Louie White, Jr.; his daughters, Diana Alexander, Debra
45	45	White, Patricia Hunter, and Jacqueline Michelle Howard; and his
46	46	grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and, be it further
47	47	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
48	48	the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
49	49	from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
50	50	day, it do so in memory of Captain Louie W. White.
