5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of World War II veteran, businessman, and |
---|
7 | 7 | | Waller County civic leader Royce Hopkins, who died February 6, |
---|
8 | 8 | | 2009, at the age of 84; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Royce Hopkins was born May 20, 1924, in Headrick, |
---|
10 | 10 | | Oklahoma, to Roy and Lillie Hopkins; he enlisted in the United |
---|
11 | 11 | | States Army Air Corps at the age of 18 and served as a B-17 bomber |
---|
12 | 12 | | pilot in the 8th Air Force, 306th Bomb Group, 367th Bomb |
---|
13 | 13 | | Squadron; he flew 26 combat missions over Germany and earned |
---|
14 | 14 | | numerous medals, including four Air Medals, two Presidential |
---|
15 | 15 | | Commendations, and a Purple Heart; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Hopkins received a bachelor's degree in |
---|
17 | 17 | | accounting with honors from Texas Tech University and began |
---|
18 | 18 | | working as an accountant for the Lynn Elliott Company and EIM in |
---|
19 | 19 | | Houston; he later became general manager for EIM, where he |
---|
20 | 20 | | developed and patented a flow valve controller; in 1968 he joined |
---|
21 | 21 | | Texas Steel and Wire as vice president and general manager and |
---|
22 | 22 | | became a group vice president when the company was acquired by |
---|
23 | 23 | | Davis-Walker Corporation; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, After he retired in 1981, Royce became active in |
---|
25 | 25 | | the Republican Party and served as a precinct chairman and a |
---|
26 | 26 | | member of the Waller County executive committee; he also served |
---|
27 | 27 | | on several civic boards and committees and supported the Houston |
---|
28 | 28 | | Executive Airport; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Hopkins was a longtime member of the 306th |
---|
30 | 30 | | Bomb Group Association, serving as treasurer and assisting in the |
---|
31 | 31 | | development of the Thurleigh Airfield 306th Bomb Group Museum; he |
---|
32 | 32 | | was also a member of and active leader in the First United |
---|
33 | 33 | | Methodist Church in Brookshire; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Royce Hopkins was an honorable man who was admired |
---|
35 | 35 | | and respected in the community for his service and his many |
---|
36 | 36 | | accomplishments; he was a devoted husband, father, and |
---|
37 | 37 | | grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured |
---|
38 | 38 | | forever by all who knew him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
41 | 41 | | family of Royce Hopkins: his wife, Mollie; his daughters and |
---|
42 | 42 | | sons-in-law, Sharon and Peter Harvey, Kim and Jeff Montag, and |
---|
43 | 43 | | Kit Hopkins; his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Andrea |
---|
44 | 44 | | Hopkins; his grandchildren, Chris and Jennifer; and his sisters, |
---|
45 | 45 | | Joye McLain and Lois Ann King; and, be it further |

46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

47 | 47 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |

48 | 48 | | Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
