55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of World War II veteran, businessman, and
77 Waller County civic leader Royce Hopkins, who died February 6,
88 2009, at the age of 84; and
99 WHEREAS, Royce Hopkins was born May 20, 1924, in Headrick,
1010 Oklahoma, to Roy and Lillie Hopkins; he enlisted in the United
1111 States Army Air Corps at the age of 18 and served as a B-17 bomber
1212 pilot in the 8th Air Force, 306th Bomb Group, 367th Bomb
1313 Squadron; he flew 26 combat missions over Germany and earned
1414 numerous medals, including four Air Medals, two Presidential
1515 Commendations, and a Purple Heart; and
1616 WHEREAS, Mr. Hopkins received a bachelor's degree in
1717 accounting with honors from Texas Tech University and began
1818 working as an accountant for the Lynn Elliott Company and EIM in
1919 Houston; he later became general manager for EIM, where he
2020 developed and patented a flow valve controller; in 1968 he joined
2121 Texas Steel and Wire as vice president and general manager and
2222 became a group vice president when the company was acquired by
2323 Davis-Walker Corporation; and
2424 WHEREAS, After he retired in 1981, Royce became active in
2525 the Republican Party and served as a precinct chairman and a
2626 member of the Waller County executive committee; he also served
2727 on several civic boards and committees and supported the Houston
2828 Executive Airport; and
2929 WHEREAS, Mr. Hopkins was a longtime member of the 306th
3030 Bomb Group Association, serving as treasurer and assisting in the
3131 development of the Thurleigh Airfield 306th Bomb Group Museum; he
3232 was also a member of and active leader in the First United
3333 Methodist Church in Brookshire; and
3434 WHEREAS, Royce Hopkins was an honorable man who was admired
3535 and respected in the community for his service and his many
3636 accomplishments; he was a devoted husband, father, and
3737 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
3838 forever by all who knew him; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4040 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4141 family of Royce Hopkins: his wife, Mollie; his daughters and
4242 sons-in-law, Sharon and Peter Harvey, Kim and Jeff Montag, and
4343 Kit Hopkins; his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Andrea
4444 Hopkins; his grandchildren, Chris and Jennifer; and his sisters,
4545 Joye McLain and Lois Ann King; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4747 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4848 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4949 memory of Royce Hopkins.
