11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 224
22 WHEREAS, Residents of Fannin County are gathering at the
33 Texas State Capitol on March 4, 2009, to celebrate Fannin County
44 Day, and this occasion provides an opportunity to recognize the
55 rich history and significant accomplishments of this attractive
66 part of the Lone Star State; and
77 WHEREAS, The first nonnative settlements in the area that
88 would become Fannin County were established in 1836, the year
99 Texas won its independence from Mexico; when the county was
1010 formed the following year, it took its name from Colonel James
1111 Walker Fannin, Jr., a commander of the Texan revolutionaries who
1212 had been killed in the Goliad Massacre; Bonham, the county seat,
1313 was also named for an independence hero, James Bonham, who died
1414 at the Alamo and is now honored with a statue at the county
1515 courthouse; and
1616 WHEREAS, A land of gently rolling hills bounded by the Red
1717 River to the north, Fannin County provides good land for farming
1818 and ranching, and those pursuits have been economic mainstays
1919 since the county was established; today, cattle, corn, wheat,
2020 milo, pecans, and hay are key products, and the many acres of
2121 farmland in the county create a tranquil, pastoral landscape;
2222 other businesses such as communications and manufacturing help
2323 to strengthen and diversify the economy; and
2424 WHEREAS, Bonham, with a population of almost 10,000, is the
2525 county's largest city; it was the hometown of Sam Rayburn, the
2626 legendary Texas politician who was a member of the congress for
2727 48 years and is the longest-serving speaker of the United States
2828 House of Representatives; his legacy is recalled at the Sam Rayburn
2929 Library and Museum and the Sam Rayburn House Museum; Bonham is
3030 also the site of the Fannin County Museum of History, the
3131 Creative Arts Center, and Fort Inglish Park, a replica of the
3232 stockade and log buildings erected by early settlers; and
3333 WHEREAS, Other well-known county attractions focus on
3434 outdoor recreation; Lake Bonham comprises more than 1,000 acres
3535 of water and is bordered by a golf course and camping facilities;
3636 additional recreational lakes are found at Bonham State Park and
3737 the Caddo National Grasslands preserve, and these public lands
3838 also offer opportunities for hiking, fishing, biking, and other
3939 activities; and
4040 WHEREAS, Fannin County's 33,000 residents can take pride in
4141 their area's rich history, productive businesses, and abundant
4242 recreational activities, and it is an honor to pay tribute to
4343 their many contributions to the State of Texas; now, therefore,
4444 be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4646 Legislature, hereby recognize March 4, 2009, as Fannin County Day
4747 at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the visitors from
4848 that notable Texas county for an enjoyable and rewarding visit to
4949 Austin.
