1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 224
2	2	WHEREAS, Residents of Fannin County are gathering at the
3	3	Texas State Capitol on March 4, 2009, to celebrate Fannin County
4	4	Day, and this occasion provides an opportunity to recognize the
5	5	rich history and significant accomplishments of this attractive
6	6	part of the Lone Star State; and
7	7	WHEREAS, The first nonnative settlements in the area that
8	8	would become Fannin County were established in 1836, the year
9	9	Texas won its independence from Mexico; when the county was
10	10	formed the following year, it took its name from Colonel James
11	11	Walker Fannin, Jr., a commander of the Texan revolutionaries who
12	12	had been killed in the Goliad Massacre; Bonham, the county seat,
13	13	was also named for an independence hero, James Bonham, who died
14	14	at the Alamo and is now honored with a statue at the county
15	15	courthouse; and
16	16	WHEREAS, A land of gently rolling hills bounded by the Red
17	17	River to the north, Fannin County provides good land for farming
18	18	and ranching, and those pursuits have been economic mainstays
19	19	since the county was established; today, cattle, corn, wheat,
20	20	milo, pecans, and hay are key products, and the many acres of
21	21	farmland in the county create a tranquil, pastoral landscape;
22	22	other businesses such as communications and manufacturing help
23	23	to strengthen and diversify the economy; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Bonham, with a population of almost 10,000, is the
25	25	county's largest city; it was the hometown of Sam Rayburn, the
26	26	legendary Texas politician who was a member of the congress for
27	27	48 years and is the longest-serving speaker of the United States
28	28	House of Representatives; his legacy is recalled at the Sam Rayburn
29	29	Library and Museum and the Sam Rayburn House Museum; Bonham is
30	30	also the site of the Fannin County Museum of History, the
31	31	Creative Arts Center, and Fort Inglish Park, a replica of the
32	32	stockade and log buildings erected by early settlers; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Other well-known county attractions focus on
34	34	outdoor recreation; Lake Bonham comprises more than 1,000 acres
35	35	of water and is bordered by a golf course and camping facilities;
36	36	additional recreational lakes are found at Bonham State Park and
37	37	the Caddo National Grasslands preserve, and these public lands
38	38	also offer opportunities for hiking, fishing, biking, and other
39	39	activities; and
40	40	WHEREAS, Fannin County's 33,000 residents can take pride in
41	41	their area's rich history, productive businesses, and abundant
42	42	recreational activities, and it is an honor to pay tribute to
43	43	their many contributions to the State of Texas; now, therefore,
44	44	be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
46	46	Legislature, hereby recognize March 4, 2009, as Fannin County Day
47	47	at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the visitors from
48	48	that notable Texas county for an enjoyable and rewarding visit to
49	49	Austin.
