5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |

6 | 6 | | citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of longtime University |

7 | 7 | | of Houston advocate Wilhelmina Daisy Cullen Robertson Smith, who |
---|
8 | 8 | | died January 26, 2009, at the age of 86; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, She was born Wilhelmina Daisy Cullen to Hugh Roy |
---|
10 | 10 | | Cullen and Lillie Cranz Cullen, a founding family of the |
---|
11 | 11 | | University of Houston and its first major benefactors; she earned |
---|
12 | 12 | | a bachelor of science degree in 1944 and continued her family's |
---|
13 | 13 | | legacy of support for the university; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The University of Houston System Board of Regents |
---|
15 | 15 | | has approved the construction of a $38.7 million sports complex |
---|
16 | 16 | | to be named the Wilhelmina Robertson Smith Pavilion, which will |
---|
17 | 17 | | be located at Robertson Stadium, the building named for Mrs. |
---|
18 | 18 | | Smith's first husband, Corbin J. Robertson, Sr., who died in 1991 |
---|
19 | 19 | | and had been a strong supporter of early Cougar athletics |
---|
20 | 20 | | programs; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was a life member of the University of |
---|
22 | 22 | | Houston Alumni Organization and received a Distinguished Alumni |
---|
23 | 23 | | Award in 1989; she received an honorary doctorate from the |
---|
24 | 24 | | university in 1988; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Wilhelmina Smith was a woman of courage, charm, |
---|
26 | 26 | | and generosity of spirit; a dearly loved wife, mother, and |
---|
27 | 27 | | grandmother, she leaves behind memories that will be treasured |
---|
28 | 28 | | forever by all who knew her; now, therefore, be it |
---|
29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
31 | 31 | | family of Wilhelmina Daisy Cullen Robertson Smith: her husband, |
---|
32 | 32 | | Edgar A. Smith, Jr.; her children, Wilhelmina E. "Beth" |
---|
33 | 33 | | Robertson, Lillie T. Robertson, Corbin J. Robertson, Jr., |
