1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 251
2	2	WHEREAS, Citizens from Amarillo and other communities
3	3	located in the Texas Panhandle are visiting Austin on February
4	4	24, 2009, to pay tribute to their region's rich heritage and to
5	5	celebrate Panhandle Day at the State Capitol; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The Panhandle is a thriving region of the state
7	7	and home to one of the oldest inhabited places in Texas;
8	8	stretching through the northern part of the region is Palo Duro
9	9	Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the country, which boasts
10	10	spectacular views and reveals through its exposed strata a
11	11	geologic record spanning 250 million years; and
12	12	WHEREAS, Rich in history, the region is also known for its
13	13	traditional ranch lands, crop and meat production, large
14	14	stretches of oil and gas reserves, major industry, and a
15	15	nationally recognized workforce; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Amarillo, the principal northern city of the
17	17	Panhandle, is a dynamic urban center with a population of almost
18	18	175,000 and a wide array of cultural amenities; contributing to
19	19	Amarillo's economic vitality are a Bell Helicopter tilt-rotor
20	20	assembly center, where the V-22 Osprey and the US101 presidential
21	21	helicopters are assembled, as well as the only
22	22	assembly-disassembly plant for the nation's nuclear weapons
23	23	arsenal, a facility operated by BWXT Pantex for the United States
24	24	Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration;
25	25	and
26	26	WHEREAS, A region of many exemplary citizens and community
27	27	leaders, the Texas Panhandle is also home to excellent
28	28	educational institutions; the Texas Tech University System,
29	29	including its medical, law, and pharmacy schools, and West Texas
30	30	A&M University are among the premier institutions in Texas and
31	31	boast ever-increasing enrollments, nationally recognized
32	32	programs and faculty, and outstanding graduates; Amarillo
33	33	College and South Plains College continue to be among the finest
34	34	community colleges in the country, and Wayland Baptist
35	35	University, Frank Phillips College, Western Texas College, and
36	36	Clarendon College are all outstanding educational institutions
37	37	in the area; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Outstanding attractions in the region include the
39	39	Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, which is located on the
40	40	campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon and is the largest
41	41	history museum in the state, and the Texas Tech University
42	42	campus, which is host to many restored structures at the National
43	43	Ranching Heritage Center, a 15-acre site tracing the evolution of
44	44	ranch architecture and the history of the cattle industry in
45	45	Texas; and
46	46	WHEREAS, The citizens of the Panhandle region are renowned
47	47	for their friendliness and warmth; they have helped to build
48	48	vital urban centers that serve not only a large part of Texas but
49	49	also of eastern New Mexico; it is a pleasure for the Texas Senate
50	50	to pay tribute to the Panhandle of Texas and the region's fine
51	51	residents; now, therefore, be it
52	52	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
53	53	Legislature, hereby recognize February 24, 2009, as Panhandle
54	54	Day at the State Capitol and extend to the delegations in
55	55	attendance today and to their fellow citizens sincere
56	56	appreciation for their contributions to the Lone Star State; and,
57	57	be it further
58	58	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
59	59	honor of this event.
