11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 251
22 WHEREAS, Citizens from Amarillo and other communities
33 located in the Texas Panhandle are visiting Austin on February
44 24, 2009, to pay tribute to their region's rich heritage and to
55 celebrate Panhandle Day at the State Capitol; and
66 WHEREAS, The Panhandle is a thriving region of the state
77 and home to one of the oldest inhabited places in Texas;
88 stretching through the northern part of the region is Palo Duro
99 Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the country, which boasts
1010 spectacular views and reveals through its exposed strata a
1111 geologic record spanning 250 million years; and
1212 WHEREAS, Rich in history, the region is also known for its
1313 traditional ranch lands, crop and meat production, large
1414 stretches of oil and gas reserves, major industry, and a
1515 nationally recognized workforce; and
1616 WHEREAS, Amarillo, the principal northern city of the
1717 Panhandle, is a dynamic urban center with a population of almost
1818 175,000 and a wide array of cultural amenities; contributing to
1919 Amarillo's economic vitality are a Bell Helicopter tilt-rotor
2020 assembly center, where the V-22 Osprey and the US101 presidential
2121 helicopters are assembled, as well as the only
2222 assembly-disassembly plant for the nation's nuclear weapons
2323 arsenal, a facility operated by BWXT Pantex for the United States
2424 Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration;
2525 and
2626 WHEREAS, A region of many exemplary citizens and community
2727 leaders, the Texas Panhandle is also home to excellent
2828 educational institutions; the Texas Tech University System,
2929 including its medical, law, and pharmacy schools, and West Texas
3030 A&M University are among the premier institutions in Texas and
3131 boast ever-increasing enrollments, nationally recognized
3232 programs and faculty, and outstanding graduates; Amarillo
3333 College and South Plains College continue to be among the finest
3434 community colleges in the country, and Wayland Baptist
3535 University, Frank Phillips College, Western Texas College, and
3636 Clarendon College are all outstanding educational institutions
3737 in the area; and
3838 WHEREAS, Outstanding attractions in the region include the
3939 Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, which is located on the
4040 campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon and is the largest
4141 history museum in the state, and the Texas Tech University
4242 campus, which is host to many restored structures at the National
4343 Ranching Heritage Center, a 15-acre site tracing the evolution of
4444 ranch architecture and the history of the cattle industry in
4545 Texas; and
4646 WHEREAS, The citizens of the Panhandle region are renowned
4747 for their friendliness and warmth; they have helped to build
4848 vital urban centers that serve not only a large part of Texas but
4949 also of eastern New Mexico; it is a pleasure for the Texas Senate
5050 to pay tribute to the Panhandle of Texas and the region's fine
5151 residents; now, therefore, be it
5252 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
5353 Legislature, hereby recognize February 24, 2009, as Panhandle
5454 Day at the State Capitol and extend to the delegations in
5555 attendance today and to their fellow citizens sincere
5656 appreciation for their contributions to the Lone Star State; and,
5757 be it further
5858 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
5959 honor of this event.
