11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 253
22 WHEREAS, Citizens from Nacogdoches County and members of
33 the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce and of the Leadership
44 Nacogdoches Class of 2009 are celebrating Nacogdoches County
55 Days at the State Capitol on February 18 and 19, 2009; and
66 WHEREAS, Known for its rich and varied history,
77 Nacogdoches County is one of the original counties of the
88 Republic of Texas; the region was occupied by Caddo Indians and
99 Spanish missionaries before the arrival of Anglo-Americans in
1010 the 1820s; and
1111 WHEREAS, The county seat, Nacogdoches, is the oldest city
1212 in Texas and received its official designation from the Mexican
1313 government in 1779; it was home to the state's first newspaper,
1414 Gaceta de Tejas, and today, the city maintains such significant
1515 historic landmarks as the Old Stone Fort, which figured
1616 prominently in the quest for Texas' independence; and
1717 WHEREAS, Located in the Piney Woods of East Texas, known
1818 also as "Texas Forest Country," Nacogdoches County boasts a
1919 fertile forestland, which provides residents with a thriving
2020 timber business and a prosperous agribusiness; and
2121 WHEREAS, With its natural beauty and charm, Nacogdoches
2222 County also lends itself to numerous recreational activities and
2323 outdoor events; the Sam Rayburn Reservoir and Angelina National
2424 Forest are both popular sites for camping, hiking, and fishing,
2525 and the annual Texas Blueberry Festival celebrates the county's
2626 thriving blueberry industry; the county is also one of the first
2727 three Certified Retirement Communities in Texas; and
2828 WHEREAS, Higher education is an important part of daily
2929 life for residents of the City of Nacogdoches, as it is the home
3030 of Stephen F. Austin State University, a respected institution
3131 that supports the local economy and infuses the city with a
3232 youthful energy and spirit; and
3333 WHEREAS, Nacogdoches County has played an important role
3434 in the history of Texas, and it is appropriate to pay tribute to
3535 its residents for their many contributions to the Lone Star
3636 State; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3838 Legislature, hereby recognize February 18 and 19, 2009, as
3939 Nacogdoches County Days at the State Capitol; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4141 honor of this event.
