2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, A group from Baylor University is visiting the |

3 | 3 | | State Capitol on February 19, 2009, and this occasion provides a |
---|
4 | 4 | | fitting opportunity to pay tribute to the rich history of this |
---|
5 | 5 | | notable institution; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Baylor University dates back to 1841, when 35 |
---|
7 | 7 | | delegates at the Union Baptist Association meeting accepted a |
---|
8 | 8 | | proposal by the Reverend William Milton Tryon and State District |
---|
9 | 9 | | Judge R. E. B. Baylor to create a Baptist university in Texas; the |
---|
10 | 10 | | Texas Baptist Education Society later petitioned the Congress of |
---|
11 | 11 | | the Republic of Texas, and, on February 1, 1845, an act was signed |
---|
12 | 12 | | into law that officially established Baylor University; Reverend |
---|
13 | 13 | | Tryon and Judge Baylor are regarded as the founders of the |
---|
14 | 14 | | university, along with the Reverend James Huckins, who was the |
---|
15 | 15 | | first Baptist missionary to Texas and the university's first |
---|
16 | 16 | | full-time fund-raiser; each year in February, the Baylor |
---|
17 | 17 | | University community hosts a Founders Day celebration to |
---|
18 | 18 | | commemorate the anniversary of its charter; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Today, Baylor University is a nationally ranked |
---|
20 | 20 | | liberal arts institution with a population of more than 14,000 |
---|
21 | 21 | | students working toward degrees in 145 areas of study; this |
---|
22 | 22 | | private college is small enough to offer its students personal |
---|
23 | 23 | | attention but large enough to feature Big 12 athletics programs |
---|
24 | 24 | | and nearly 300 student organizations; the university places |
---|
25 | 25 | | special emphasis on community service, and students, faculty, |
---|
26 | 26 | | and staff volunteer countless hours in the Waco area; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, For more than a century and a half, Baylor |
---|
28 | 28 | | University has provided its students with an outstanding |
---|
29 | 29 | | education and a solid foundation for future success and, in so |
---|
30 | 30 | | doing, it has contributed to the continued progress of the Lone |
---|
31 | 31 | | Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby honor Baylor University and extend a warm |
---|
34 | 34 | | welcome to the representatives from the university who are |
---|
35 | 35 | | present in the State Capitol today; and, be it further |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

37 | 37 | | Baylor University as an expression of high regard from the Texas |
