11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 256
22 WHEREAS, A group from Baylor University is visiting the
33 State Capitol on February 19, 2009, and this occasion provides a
44 fitting opportunity to pay tribute to the rich history of this
55 notable institution; and
66 WHEREAS, Baylor University dates back to 1841, when 35
77 delegates at the Union Baptist Association meeting accepted a
88 proposal by the Reverend William Milton Tryon and State District
99 Judge R. E. B. Baylor to create a Baptist university in Texas; the
1010 Texas Baptist Education Society later petitioned the Congress of
1111 the Republic of Texas, and, on February 1, 1845, an act was signed
1212 into law that officially established Baylor University; Reverend
1313 Tryon and Judge Baylor are regarded as the founders of the
1414 university, along with the Reverend James Huckins, who was the
1515 first Baptist missionary to Texas and the university's first
1616 full-time fund-raiser; each year in February, the Baylor
1717 University community hosts a Founders Day celebration to
1818 commemorate the anniversary of its charter; and
1919 WHEREAS, Today, Baylor University is a nationally ranked
2020 liberal arts institution with a population of more than 14,000
2121 students working toward degrees in 145 areas of study; this
2222 private college is small enough to offer its students personal
2323 attention but large enough to feature Big 12 athletics programs
2424 and nearly 300 student organizations; the university places
2525 special emphasis on community service, and students, faculty,
2626 and staff volunteer countless hours in the Waco area; and
2727 WHEREAS, For more than a century and a half, Baylor
2828 University has provided its students with an outstanding
2929 education and a solid foundation for future success and, in so
3030 doing, it has contributed to the continued progress of the Lone
3131 Star State; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3333 Legislature, hereby honor Baylor University and extend a warm
3434 welcome to the representatives from the university who are
3535 present in the State Capitol today; and, be it further
3636 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3737 Baylor University as an expression of high regard from the Texas
3838 Senate.
