55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Humble in mourning the loss of Wilson Archer, who
77 died January 28, 2009, at the age of 73; and
88 WHEREAS, A longtime public servant and successful
99 entrepreneur, Wilson Archer was born and raised in Humble; he was
1010 a 1954 graduate of Charles Bender High School, and he served the
1111 city for 25 years as an elected official; and
1212 WHEREAS, Mr. Archer was elected mayor in 1995 after serving
1313 15 years as a city council member; during his 10 years as mayor,
1414 he worked hard to ensure that the infrastructure of the city kept
1515 pace with the growing demands of residents, and he was able to add
1616 approximately $50 million to the city's coffers through
1717 negotiation with the Harris County Metropolitan Transit
1818 Authority; and
1919 WHEREAS, Further examples of his foresight are his vision
2020 to build the Humble Civic Center and his initiative to create the
2121 seniors' gardening program, which became known as Archer's Acre;
2222 and
2323 WHEREAS, Earlier in his career, Mr. Archer owned a chain of
2424 local convenience stores called Wilson Superette, which
2525 supported sports teams and schools in addition to providing
2626 needed jobs and economic activity to the area; and
2727 WHEREAS, Active in civic affairs, Mr. Archer participated
2828 in numerous organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America,
2929 the Northeast Medical Center Hospital, the Humble Area
3030 Assistance Ministries, and the FamilyTime Foundation; and
3131 WHEREAS, A man of courage, vision, and compassion, he gave
3232 unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel
3333 will not be forgotten by those who knew him; now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3535 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3636 family of Wilson Archer: his sons, Curtis and Craig; his
3737 granddaughter, Cassie; his brother, Haden Archer; and his
3838 sister, Jan Lou Bar; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4040 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4141 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4242 memory of Wilson Archer.
