5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of Humble in mourning the loss of Wilson Archer, who |
---|
7 | 7 | | died January 28, 2009, at the age of 73; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A longtime public servant and successful |
---|
9 | 9 | | entrepreneur, Wilson Archer was born and raised in Humble; he was |
---|
10 | 10 | | a 1954 graduate of Charles Bender High School, and he served the |
---|
11 | 11 | | city for 25 years as an elected official; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Archer was elected mayor in 1995 after serving |
---|
13 | 13 | | 15 years as a city council member; during his 10 years as mayor, |
---|
14 | 14 | | he worked hard to ensure that the infrastructure of the city kept |
---|
15 | 15 | | pace with the growing demands of residents, and he was able to add |
---|
16 | 16 | | approximately $50 million to the city's coffers through |
---|
17 | 17 | | negotiation with the Harris County Metropolitan Transit |
---|
18 | 18 | | Authority; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Further examples of his foresight are his vision |
---|
20 | 20 | | to build the Humble Civic Center and his initiative to create the |
---|
21 | 21 | | seniors' gardening program, which became known as Archer's Acre; |
---|
22 | 22 | | and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Earlier in his career, Mr. Archer owned a chain of |
---|
24 | 24 | | local convenience stores called Wilson Superette, which |
---|
25 | 25 | | supported sports teams and schools in addition to providing |
---|
26 | 26 | | needed jobs and economic activity to the area; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Active in civic affairs, Mr. Archer participated |
---|
28 | 28 | | in numerous organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America, |
---|
29 | 29 | | the Northeast Medical Center Hospital, the Humble Area |
---|
30 | 30 | | Assistance Ministries, and the FamilyTime Foundation; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, A man of courage, vision, and compassion, he gave |
---|
32 | 32 | | unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel |
---|
33 | 33 | | will not be forgotten by those who knew him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
36 | 36 | | family of Wilson Archer: his sons, Curtis and Craig; his |
---|
37 | 37 | | granddaughter, Cassie; his brother, Haden Archer; and his |
---|
38 | 38 | | sister, Jan Lou Bar; and, be it further |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
40 | 40 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
42 | 42 | | memory of Wilson Archer. |
