| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the Village at Incarnate Word in San Antonio on the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | occasion of its 20th anniversary; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Village at Incarnate Word is a retirement |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | community founded by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Word; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Sisters of Charity began their work in the San |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Antonio area in 1869 when three members of the order arrived to |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | care for those suffering from a yellow fever epidemic; their |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | efforts resulted in the opening of Santa Rosa Hospital, the first |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | hospital in San Antonio; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, As the needs of the area grew, the Sisters of |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Charity also opened an orphanage and a school, and when the needs |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | of the elderly became pressing, a home for them was opened in |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | 1895; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, After many years of use, the home needed |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | substantial repairs, and the decision was made to demolish it and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | build a new facility that would serve as a retirement home not |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | just for the Sisters of Charity, but for laypeople as well, and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the Village at Incarnate Word opened its doors on September 8, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | 1988; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Today, this exemplary facility offers independent |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and assisted living, nursing care, and a unit to care for persons |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | with dementia; the services and care provided at the Village at |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Incarnate Word are truly emblematic of the compassionate |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | heritage of the Sisters of Charity; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Sisters of Charity on their |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | legacy of service and extend to them congratulations on the 20th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | anniversary of the Village at Incarnate Word; and, be it further |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | this outstanding institution as an expression of esteem from the |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Texas Senate. |
