2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	welcome members of the State Firemen's and Fire Marshals'
4	4	Association of Texas on Firefighter Legislative Day at the State
5	5	Capitol on March 25, 2009; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The members of this esteemed organization are
7	7	gathering to recognize and honor the tireless and heroic actions
8	8	of the members of the Texas fire service; the names of six
9	9	courageous volunteer firefighters who died in the line of duty
10	10	are being unveiled at the volunteer firemen's monument on the
11	11	Capitol grounds; and
12	12	WHEREAS, The firemen being honored are Elmer Homilius of
13	13	the Comfort Volunteer Fire Department, who died October 15, 1984;
14	14	Austin Cheek of the Noonday Volunteer Fire Department, who died
15	15	August 3, 2007; Kevin Williams of the Noonday Volunteer Fire
16	16	Department, who died August 3, 2007; William Simes of the
17	17	Giddings Volunteer Fire Department, who died September 25, 2007;
18	18	Robert Knight of the Teague Volunteer Fire Department, who died
19	19	July 5, 2008; and Joe Jordan of the Pickton Pine Forest Volunteer
20	20	Fire Department, who died July 4, 2008; most of the families of
21	21	the fallen firefighters are here with us today; and
22	22	WHEREAS, The State Firemen's and Fire Marshals'
23	23	Association of Texas is the oldest and the largest fire service
24	24	organization in the state; the association was founded in 1876
25	25	and currently represents more than 1,200 fire departments,
26	26	19,000 individual members, and 80 industrial fire brigades; and
27	27	WHEREAS, The association sponsors and supports the world's
28	28	largest fire-training school, held each summer at Texas A&M
29	29	University; the association also provides instructors and
30	30	professional services on the fire school's advisory board; and
31	31	WHEREAS, The cornerstone of the State Firemen's and Fire
32	32	Marshals' Association is the certification program for volunteer
33	33	firefighters, which encourages training, education, and
34	34	certification for all volunteers; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Approximately 70 percent of the firefighters
36	36	providing fire service to the citizens of Texas are volunteer
37	37	firefighters; they volunteer their valuable services, responding
38	38	to emergency calls and attending training sessions to learn the
39	39	latest firefighting techniques; now, therefore, be it
40	40	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
41	41	Legislature, hereby commend the firefighters of Texas for their
42	42	courageous actions and devotion to duty on behalf of their fellow
43	43	citizens and pay tribute to the volunteer firefighters who have
44	44	died in the line of duty; and, be it further
45	45	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
46	46	honor of the firefighters and fire marshals of Texas.
