11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 345
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 welcome members of the State Firemen's and Fire Marshals'
44 Association of Texas on Firefighter Legislative Day at the State
55 Capitol on March 25, 2009; and
66 WHEREAS, The members of this esteemed organization are
77 gathering to recognize and honor the tireless and heroic actions
88 of the members of the Texas fire service; the names of six
99 courageous volunteer firefighters who died in the line of duty
1010 are being unveiled at the volunteer firemen's monument on the
1111 Capitol grounds; and
1212 WHEREAS, The firemen being honored are Elmer Homilius of
1313 the Comfort Volunteer Fire Department, who died October 15, 1984;
1414 Austin Cheek of the Noonday Volunteer Fire Department, who died
1515 August 3, 2007; Kevin Williams of the Noonday Volunteer Fire
1616 Department, who died August 3, 2007; William Simes of the
1717 Giddings Volunteer Fire Department, who died September 25, 2007;
1818 Robert Knight of the Teague Volunteer Fire Department, who died
1919 July 5, 2008; and Joe Jordan of the Pickton Pine Forest Volunteer
2020 Fire Department, who died July 4, 2008; most of the families of
2121 the fallen firefighters are here with us today; and
2222 WHEREAS, The State Firemen's and Fire Marshals'
2323 Association of Texas is the oldest and the largest fire service
2424 organization in the state; the association was founded in 1876
2525 and currently represents more than 1,200 fire departments,
2626 19,000 individual members, and 80 industrial fire brigades; and
2727 WHEREAS, The association sponsors and supports the world's
2828 largest fire-training school, held each summer at Texas A&M
2929 University; the association also provides instructors and
3030 professional services on the fire school's advisory board; and
3131 WHEREAS, The cornerstone of the State Firemen's and Fire
3232 Marshals' Association is the certification program for volunteer
3333 firefighters, which encourages training, education, and
3434 certification for all volunteers; and
3535 WHEREAS, Approximately 70 percent of the firefighters
3636 providing fire service to the citizens of Texas are volunteer
3737 firefighters; they volunteer their valuable services, responding
3838 to emergency calls and attending training sessions to learn the
3939 latest firefighting techniques; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4141 Legislature, hereby commend the firefighters of Texas for their
4242 courageous actions and devotion to duty on behalf of their fellow
4343 citizens and pay tribute to the volunteer firefighters who have
4444 died in the line of duty; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4646 honor of the firefighters and fire marshals of Texas.
