| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the citizens of Uvalde County and Texans across the state in |

| 4 | 4 | | celebrating March 11, 2009, as Uvalde County Day at the State |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Capitol; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Created by the Texas Legislature in the mid-1850s |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | out of territory from Bexar County, Uvalde County was named for |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | the Spanish governor of Coahuila, Juan de Ugalde, who had led |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | troops to a decisive victory over Apache warriors in 1790; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The City of Uvalde is the county seat; founded by |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Reading W. Black in the 1850s, it is known for its four public |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | plazas and its picturesque architecture; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Uvalde County was home to Garner Army Air Field |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | during World War II; the former airfield is now the site of |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Southwest Texas Junior College; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Known as the County of 1,000 Springs, Uvalde County |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | is also a center for wool and mohair production, and its |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | agricultural output plays a major role in the county's economy; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Uvalde County are justly proud of |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | its long and distinguished history and the many achievements its |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | citizens have made to further the growth and progress of our |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | state; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Uvalde County on |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | their many contributions to our state and extend to them a |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | heartfelt welcome to Austin for Uvalde County Day at the State |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Capitol; and, be it further |
|---|
