11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 410
22 WHEREAS, Proud residents of the Mid-Valley region of Texas
33 are gathering in Austin on March 11, 2009, to celebrate
44 Mid-Valley Day at the State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Located in the Rio Grande Valley, the Mid-Valley
66 region includes the towns of Alamo, Donna, Mercedes, Progreso,
77 Progreso Lakes, San Juan, and Weslaco; this area is a center for
88 agribusiness, with farmers producing sugarcane, grains, and
99 citrus fruit such as grapefruits and oranges; and
1010 WHEREAS, The City of Alamo has been undertaking a
1111 far-reaching revitalization plan that has resulted in the
1212 construction of a new city hall, public library, and public works
1313 center; in addition, the town is making significant improvements
1414 to its infrastructure and fire department and police facilities;
1515 and
1616 WHEREAS, Upholding the motto "the City with a Heart in the
1717 Heart of the Rio Grande Valley," Donna looks forward to the
1818 completion of the Donna International Bridge to Mexico; the
1919 eight-lane bridge is expected to bolster the city's economy
2020 because of the increased number of shoppers and tourists
2121 traveling to and from Mexico; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mercedes has long been a major center for the
2323 processing and marketing of livestock, cotton, and vegetables,
2424 and it is also known for its boot makers and the shopping
2525 opportunities at the Rio Grande Valley Premium Outlets; the
2626 annual Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and Rodeo draws more than
2727 200,000 people to town each year, and the event provides valuable
2828 scholarship funds for 4-H and Future Farmers of America students;
2929 and
3030 WHEREAS, In addition to being centers for the sugarcane
3131 business, Progreso and Progreso Lakes have been serving as
3232 gateways to the Rio Grande Valley since the opening of the
3333 Progreso-Nuevo Progreso International Bridge in 2003; and
3434 WHEREAS, Fast-growing San Juan is the home of the Virgen de
3535 San Juan del Valle Shrine, which attracts multitudes of pilgrims
3636 from throughout the United States and Mexico, and the town has
3737 also installed a landmark flagpole that pays tribute to the men
3838 and women who have served in the nation's armed forces; and
3939 WHEREAS, The City of Weslaco has become a favorite
4040 destination for tourists, golfers, retirees, and birders and is
4141 the location of two important Texas A&M University research
4242 stations; the annual Onion Fest celebrates the development of the
4343 famous Texas 1015 onion in Weslaco, and this popular event brings
4444 many visitors to the city; and
4545 WHEREAS, Throughout the Mid-Valley region, great emphasis
4646 is placed on the value of education, and one particularly
4747 striking example of the Mid-Valley's educational achievements
4848 came in December of 2008, when U.S. News & World Report ranked the
4949 Science Academy of South Texas in Mercedes among the nation's top
5050 100 high schools; and
5151 WHEREAS, The residents of this dynamic region of the Lone
5252 Star State are justifiably proud of their hard work, civic
5353 commitment, and innovative spirit, and their efforts have
5454 created a group of notable Texas communities that are well
5555 prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future;
5656 now, therefore, be it
5757 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
5858 Legislature, hereby recognize March 11, 2009, as Mid-Valley Day
5959 at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation best
6060 wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin.
