55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Fay Sinkin, who
77 died March 4, 2009, at the age of 90; and
88 WHEREAS, A civic leader and pioneering environmental
99 activist, Fay Sinkin played an important role for more than half
1010 a century in efforts to improve the City of San Antonio; and
1111 WHEREAS, A native of New York, Mrs. Sinkin moved to San
1212 Antonio in 1942 to marry Bill Sinkin; the couple was instrumental
1313 in organizing HemisFair '68; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Sinkin organized a successful
1515 movement to desegregate restaurants in San Antonio, and Mrs.
1616 Sinkin, who had served as president of the League of Women Voters
1717 in 1947, was instrumental in helping President Lyndon B. Johnson
1818 find and hire minority applicants to fill embassy positions; and
1919 WHEREAS, Mrs. Sinkin broke the gender barrier in many
2020 organizations over the course of her life; she was the first
2121 woman to serve on the San Antonio Board of Health, the first woman
2222 to serve on a Bexar County grand jury, and the first woman to be
2323 elected by Bexar County to the Edwards Underground Water
2424 District; and
2525 WHEREAS, Along with her husband, Mrs. Sinkin organized a
2626 program called Portrait of the American Woman that promoted
2727 minority women; she also had a part in organizing an urban
2828 coalition that enabled students from inner-city schools and
2929 wealthier districts to interact with one another; and
3030 WHEREAS, A woman of courage, determination, and unbending
3131 principle, Mrs. Sinkin gave generously to others, and her wisdom,
3232 her warmth, and her commitment to equal rights for all will not be
3333 forgotten by those who knew her; now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3535 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3636 family of Fay Sinkin; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3838 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3939 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4040 memory of Fay Sinkin.
