5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Fay Sinkin, who |
---|
7 | 7 | | died March 4, 2009, at the age of 90; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A civic leader and pioneering environmental |
---|
9 | 9 | | activist, Fay Sinkin played an important role for more than half |
---|
10 | 10 | | a century in efforts to improve the City of San Antonio; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, A native of New York, Mrs. Sinkin moved to San |
---|
12 | 12 | | Antonio in 1942 to marry Bill Sinkin; the couple was instrumental |
---|
13 | 13 | | in organizing HemisFair '68; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Sinkin organized a successful |
---|
15 | 15 | | movement to desegregate restaurants in San Antonio, and Mrs. |
---|
16 | 16 | | Sinkin, who had served as president of the League of Women Voters |
---|
17 | 17 | | in 1947, was instrumental in helping President Lyndon B. Johnson |
---|
18 | 18 | | find and hire minority applicants to fill embassy positions; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Sinkin broke the gender barrier in many |
---|
20 | 20 | | organizations over the course of her life; she was the first |
---|
21 | 21 | | woman to serve on the San Antonio Board of Health, the first woman |
---|
22 | 22 | | to serve on a Bexar County grand jury, and the first woman to be |
---|
23 | 23 | | elected by Bexar County to the Edwards Underground Water |
---|
24 | 24 | | District; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Along with her husband, Mrs. Sinkin organized a |
---|
26 | 26 | | program called Portrait of the American Woman that promoted |
---|
27 | 27 | | minority women; she also had a part in organizing an urban |
---|
28 | 28 | | coalition that enabled students from inner-city schools and |
---|
29 | 29 | | wealthier districts to interact with one another; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, A woman of courage, determination, and unbending |
---|
31 | 31 | | principle, Mrs. Sinkin gave generously to others, and her wisdom, |
---|
32 | 32 | | her warmth, and her commitment to equal rights for all will not be |
---|
33 | 33 | | forgotten by those who knew her; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
36 | 36 | | family of Fay Sinkin; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
38 | 38 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
40 | 40 | | memory of Fay Sinkin. |
