| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in |

| 3 | 3 | | recognizing Sophia Perez DeLa'O on the grand occasion of her |

| 4 | 4 | | 102nd birthday; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, This gracious lady is well known for her charm and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | generosity of spirit, and she is a revered resident of Austin; |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Sophia Perez DeLa'O was born March 13, 1907, in |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Mexico and moved to Austin at the age of nine; she grew up in East |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Austin, and she and Nicholas Avila had three children, Josie, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Fernando, and Joe Avila; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, She later married Florentino DeLa'O, a baker, and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the couple managed La Oriental Bakery in East Austin and also |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | sold bread out of their house on East 9th Street; they had a |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | daughter, Hilda DeLa'O, and together they raised the four |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | children as a family; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. DeLa'O is a beloved and respected member of |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | her community, and she is noted for her courage, her compassion |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | for others, and her enthusiasm for living each day to the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | fullest; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In honor of her birthday and the 80th birthday of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | her son Joe Avila, friends and family are joining them as they |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | celebrate the occasion together on April 1, 2009, at Joe's Bakery |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and Coffee Shop; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislature, hereby recognize Sophia Perez DeLa'O as a treasured |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | citizen of our state and extend to her best wishes for a memorable |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | 102nd birthday; and, be it further |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

| 30 | 30 | | her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
