| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Joe Avila on the notable occasion of his 80th birthday; |

| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman is well known for |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | his wisdom and generosity of spirit, and he is a respected |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | citizen of Austin; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Joe Avila was born April 14, 1929; he served the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | nation in the armed services during the Korean War; after the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | war, he returned home and married Paula Robles, who worked at his |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | parents' bakery, and the couple raised two daughters, Carolina |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Avila and Rose Maciel; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Joe learned the bakery business from his |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | stepfather Florentino DeLa'O, and in 1962 he opened his own |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | bakery, Joe's Bakery and Coffee Shop; today, his daughters and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | his granddaughter, Regina Estrada, are ably carrying on his |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | legacy as managers of this East Austin institution; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, In honor of his birthday and the 102nd birthday of |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | his mother, Sophia Perez DeLa'O, family and friends are joining |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | them as they celebrate the occasion together on April 1, 2009, at |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Joe's Bakery and Coffee Shop; now, therefore, be it |

| 22 | 22 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |

| 23 | 23 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate Joe Avila on his 80th birthday |

| 24 | 24 | | and extend to him best wishes for a festive and enjoyable |

| 25 | 25 | | celebration of this milestone in his life; and, be it further |
