| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society is the nationwide |

| 3 | 3 | | community-based health organization dedicated to eliminating |

| 4 | 4 | | cancer as a major health problem; currently one in four deaths in |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | the United States is from cancer; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Relay For Life is the American Cancer |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Society's signature event and one of the means by which the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | organization accomplishes its mission; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The Relay For Life consists of over 4,000 events |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | nationwide to honor cancer survivors, educate the general public |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | about the importance of early detection and prevention of cancer, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and raise funds in the fight against cancer; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The City of Brownsville is hosting its 11th annual |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Relay For Life at Dean Porter Park on May 1 and 2, 2009; the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Brownsville annual Relays For Life play a major role in helping |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | to support cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | services; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Brownsville community for |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | hosting an annual Relay For Life and encourage communities |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | throughout our state to participate in this effort to eradicate |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | cancer as a major health problem; and, be it further |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | honor of the City of Brownsville 2009 Relay For Life. |
