11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 431
22 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society is the nationwide
33 community-based health organization dedicated to eliminating
44 cancer as a major health problem; currently one in four deaths in
55 the United States is from cancer; and
66 WHEREAS, The Relay For Life is the American Cancer
77 Society's signature event and one of the means by which the
88 organization accomplishes its mission; and
99 WHEREAS, The Relay For Life consists of over 4,000 events
1010 nationwide to honor cancer survivors, educate the general public
1111 about the importance of early detection and prevention of cancer,
1212 and raise funds in the fight against cancer; and
1313 WHEREAS, The City of Brownsville is hosting its 11th annual
1414 Relay For Life at Dean Porter Park on May 1 and 2, 2009; the
1515 Brownsville annual Relays For Life play a major role in helping
1616 to support cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient
1717 services; now, therefore, be it
1818 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
1919 Legislature, hereby commend the Brownsville community for
2020 hosting an annual Relay For Life and encourage communities
2121 throughout our state to participate in this effort to eradicate
2222 cancer as a major health problem; and, be it further
2323 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
2424 honor of the City of Brownsville 2009 Relay For Life.
