55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Grand Saline in mourning the loss of Johnny Freelen,
77 who died March 6, 2008, at the age of 74; and
88 WHEREAS, Johnny Freelen was born July 4, 1933, in Lamar
99 County; he served in the armed forces during the Korean War and
1010 had a successful career with General Motors in Arlington; he was
1111 serving as a foreman in the company at the time of his retirement; and
1212 WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman, he was a well-known
1313 leader in his community and was respected for his many
1414 accomplishments; a 32nd-degree Mason, he was a Golden Trowel
1515 recipient and a past grand master; he organized and managed the
1616 Challenger League sports program in Grand Saline, and he was
1717 named Grand Saline Man of the Year in recognition of his many
1818 contributions to the city; and
1919 WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, he
2020 gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth,
2121 and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; he
2222 was a devout Christian and a member of Corinth Baptist Church; and
2323 WHEREAS, Johnny Freelen was a devoted husband, father, and
2424 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
2525 forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
2626 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
2727 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
2828 family of Johnny Freelen: his wife of 49 years, Johnnie Vay; his
2929 sons, Rusty and Randy; his daughter, Rhonda Grandon; his
3030 brothers, George, Frankie, Danny, and Jimmy; his sisters,
3131 Shirley Murdock, Ollie Watkins, Kay Rowland, and Judy Simpson;
3232 and his nine grandchildren; and, be it further
3333 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3434 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3535 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
3636 memory of Johnny Freelen.
