55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Sherman in mourning the loss of John D. Moseley, who
77 died March 11, 2009, at the age of 93; and
88 WHEREAS, A pioneering educator and committed civic leader,
99 John D. Moseley served as president of Austin College for 25
1010 years, bringing growth, financial stability, and innovative
1111 methods and programs to the campus; and
1212 WHEREAS, A native of Greenville, Dr. Moseley earned his
1313 bachelor's degree at East Texas State University and his master's
1414 and doctoral degrees at The University of Texas at Austin; and
1515 WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley began his career in government
1616 service; he served in the Bureau of the Budget in the Executive
1717 Office of the President of the United States, and he was the first
1818 executive director of the Texas Legislative Council; and
1919 WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley became president of Austin College in
2020 1953 during a time of declining enrollment as fewer students were
2121 taking advantage of the GI Bill; under his outstanding
2222 leadership, the college grew from 350 students to more than 1,000
2323 by 1959, and the number of buildings on campus doubled during the
2424 first 10 years of his administration; and
2525 WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley made important changes in the program
2626 of study at Austin College, reestablishing an emphasis on the
2727 classics and instituting a curriculum rooted in
2828 interdisciplinary study; he also brought international programs
2929 to the campus, which gave students the opportunity to study
3030 abroad; and
3131 WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley was an important leader in the field
3232 of higher education, helping to create Independent Colleges and
3333 Universities of Texas and working to secure legislation to create
3434 the Texas Tuition Equalization Grant; he served in leadership
3535 positions with numerous professional organizations, including as
3636 chair of the Association of American Colleges and on the board of
3737 the American Council on Education; and
3838 WHEREAS, A man of courage and vision with a passionate
3939 belief in the value of education, Dr. Moseley gave generously to
4040 others, and his wisdom, his dedication, and his valued counsel
4141 will not be forgotten by those who knew him; he was beloved by his
4242 family and friends, and he will long be remembered with affection
4343 and admiration by all who were privileged to share in his life;
4444 now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4646 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4747 family and friends of Dr. John D. Moseley; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4949 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5050 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5151 memory of John Moseley.
