2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Texas AFL-CIO President Becky Moeller has been |

3 | 3 | | elected president of the Southern Region of the AFL-CIO by the |

4 | 4 | | South Central AFL-CIO Council; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, In addition to overseeing 13 southern states in |
---|
6 | 6 | | her new position, Ms. Moeller becomes a member of the national |
---|
7 | 7 | | AFL-CIO General Board, a body that advises the governing national |
---|
8 | 8 | | AFL-CIO Executive Council; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Moeller's involvement in the labor movement |
---|
10 | 10 | | dates back to 1967, when she joined Communications Workers of |
---|
11 | 11 | | America Local 6137 in Corpus Christi as an employee of |
---|
12 | 12 | | Southwestern Bell; she went on to serve the group in a variety of |
---|
13 | 13 | | roles, including job steward, chief steward, executive board |
---|
14 | 14 | | member, vice president, secretary-treasurer, and president; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, At the state level, Ms. Moeller has been a member |
---|
16 | 16 | | of the Texas AFL-CIO executive board and chair of the scholarship |
---|
17 | 17 | | committee; in 2003, she became the first woman to hold statewide |
---|
18 | 18 | | office in the organization when she was elected |
---|
19 | 19 | | secretary-treasurer; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Appointed by Governor Ann Richards to serve as |
---|
21 | 21 | | chair of the commission overseeing the Texas Department of |
---|
22 | 22 | | Licensing and Regulation, she has also worked to benefit her |
---|
23 | 23 | | fellow citizens as a member of the United Way Board of Governors |
---|
24 | 24 | | and the Coastal Bend Workforce Development Board; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Becky Moeller has helped countless individuals to |
---|
26 | 26 | | achieve greater security and hope for a brighter future, and her |
---|
27 | 27 | | election to this important office is confirmation of her |
---|
28 | 28 | | outstanding leadership skills and effective advocacy on behalf |
---|
29 | 29 | | of working families; now, therefore, be it |
---|
30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |

31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate Becky Moeller on her election |
---|
32 | 32 | | as president of the Southern Region of the AFL-CIO and extend to |
---|
33 | 33 | | her sincere best wishes for continued success with her important |
---|
