| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in |

| 3 | 3 | | recognizing the Thurgood Marshall Legal Society, the local |

| 4 | 4 | | chapter of the National Black Law Students Association at The |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | University of Texas School of Law; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The society is hosting its annual awards banquet |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | on March 27, 2009; the banquet is a tradition that brings |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | together current members, alumni, and future law students; it |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | serves as an opportunity to recognize the hard work of members of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the organization and to award scholarships, as well as to |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | celebrate the organization's accomplishments; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, This year, the society's achievements include |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | earning the title of Chapter of the Year at the annual Rocky |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Mountain Black Law Student Association conference and winning |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | first place in the Regional Frederick Douglass Moot Court |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Competition; in addition, the society created The University of |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Texas School of Law Diversity Education Weekend and the Ashaki |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Young Women's Program and Young Men's Program; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The Ashaki programs were developed in |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | collaboration with the Austin Alternative Learning Center; the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | programs help young black women and men to recognize their |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | self-worth and personal potential through mentorship and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | leadership exercises and to better understand commitment, peer |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | pressure, and their goals and expectations for their own lives; |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The Thurgood Marshall Legal Society's many |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | valuable civic, educational, and charitable programs are truly |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | making a lasting difference in the community at large; now, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Thurgood Marshall Legal Society |

| 32 | 32 | | at The University of Texas School of Law on its numerous |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | accomplishments and its valuable contributions to the university |
|---|
