2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | join the citizens of Hopkins County and Texans across the state |
---|
4 | 4 | | in celebrating April 1, 2009, as Hopkins County Day at the State |
---|
5 | 5 | | Capitol; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Home to a majestic county courthouse built by |
---|
7 | 7 | | master architect James Riely Gordon, Hopkins County possesses a |
---|
8 | 8 | | history rich in tradition; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The county seat of Sulphur Springs is on the site |
---|
10 | 10 | | where free-flowing springs of sulphur water and fresh water once |
---|
11 | 11 | | existed; these springs drew Native Americans to the area for many |
---|
12 | 12 | | years, and after the arrival of Anglo settlers, the springs |
---|
13 | 13 | | attracted people from all over the nation for their curative |
---|
14 | 14 | | power; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The history of Sulphur Springs has provided many |
---|
16 | 16 | | testaments to the importance of the area to our state; the city |
---|
17 | 17 | | was home to the Hampton House, which is said to have been the |
---|
18 | 18 | | hiding place of Confederate documents and exiles, and to many |
---|
19 | 19 | | pioneer newspapers, and the first steam-powered factory in the |
---|
20 | 20 | | region; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Following World War II, Sulphur Springs initiated |
---|
22 | 22 | | a new city government, which provided such amenities as a city |
---|
23 | 23 | | park, a swimming pool, a rodeo arena, and baseball and football |
---|
24 | 24 | | stadiums; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Today, Hopkins County is a place where |
---|
26 | 26 | | hard-working citizens are dedicated to making the area an |
---|
27 | 27 | | outstanding place in which to live, work, and raise a family; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Hopkins County are rightly proud |
---|
29 | 29 | | of the county's rich history and the many contributions its |
---|
30 | 30 | | people have made to the growth and progress of our state; now, |
---|
31 | 31 | | therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Hopkins County on |
---|
34 | 34 | | their many contributions to the rich legacy of our state and |
---|
35 | 35 | | extend to them best wishes for a memorable Hopkins County Day at |
---|
36 | 36 | | the State Capitol; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
