| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the participants in the 2008-2009 Chronicle Classroom |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | for their commitment to the principles of journalism; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Created in 2006 by Houston Chronicle editor and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | vice president Jeff Cohen, the Chronicle Classroom is a practical |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | training and mentoring program for young journalists; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Each year, a group of Houston high school students |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | is chosen to participate in the program, for which they report to |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the offices of the Houston Chronicle every day for a half day of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | instruction in the basics of journalism and mass communication; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The classes focus on the fundamentals of daily |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | journalism while also introducing students to a range of news |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | media careers and offering practical experiences; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Chronicle Classroom students get the opportunity |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | to work on stories that will be published in the Houston |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Chronicle, a noteworthy achievement for student journalists, and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | they plan and publish a student newspaper, Insight; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, A well-informed citizenry is vital to the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | functioning of democracy, and the news media play a critical role |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | in ensuring that people have the information they need to make |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | educated decisions; the Chronicle Classroom is truly deserving |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | of recognition for its role in training the journalists of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | tomorrow; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Chronicle Classroom on its |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | mission to further the training of young journalists and extend |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | to the student participants best wishes for continued success in |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | this important field; and, be it further |

| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

| 31 | 31 | | these students as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
