5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of El Paso in mourning the loss of Dr. William Gordon |
---|
7 | 7 | | McGee, who died April 6, 2008, at the age of 74; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A graduate of The University of Texas |
---|
9 | 9 | | Southwestern Medical School, Dr. McGee completed a double |
---|
10 | 10 | | residency in internal medicine and pathology; he began working as |
---|
11 | 11 | | a pathologist at Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso, and he was |
---|
12 | 12 | | instrumental in developing a laboratory business now known as |
---|
13 | 13 | | Quest Diagnostics; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. McGee was deeply committed to providing good |
---|
15 | 15 | | medical care; he was the founder of El Paso's Emergency Medical |
---|
16 | 16 | | Service system and had served as chairman of the board of that |
---|
17 | 17 | | organization and of the Texas Medical Association, the El Paso |
---|
18 | 18 | | city-county health board, and El Paso First, where he fought to |
---|
19 | 19 | | make health insurance available to children from low-income |
---|
20 | 20 | | families; he had also served as president of the Texas Society of |
---|
21 | 21 | | Pathologists and the El Paso County Medical Society; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, He was appointed by Governor Mark White to the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Texas Tech University board of regents, where he worked to |
---|
24 | 24 | | establish the El Paso medical school as a four-year institution; |
---|
25 | 25 | | he worked statewide to improve the delivery of health care along |
---|
26 | 26 | | the border, and he was honored by the Texas Society of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Pathologists with the George J. Caldwell Award and received the |
---|
28 | 28 | | Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Medical Association; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Dr. McGee dedicated himself to his community, his |
---|
30 | 30 | | state, and his country, and his warmth, wisdom, and valued |
---|
31 | 31 | | counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, William McGee was a devoted husband, father, and |
---|
33 | 33 | | grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured |
---|
34 | 34 | | forever by his family and friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
37 | 37 | | family of Dr. William Gordon McGee; and, be it further |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
39 | 39 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
41 | 41 | | memory of William Gordon McGee. |
