55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of El Paso in mourning the loss of Dr. William Gordon
77 McGee, who died April 6, 2008, at the age of 74; and
88 WHEREAS, A graduate of The University of Texas
99 Southwestern Medical School, Dr. McGee completed a double
1010 residency in internal medicine and pathology; he began working as
1111 a pathologist at Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso, and he was
1212 instrumental in developing a laboratory business now known as
1313 Quest Diagnostics; and
1414 WHEREAS, Dr. McGee was deeply committed to providing good
1515 medical care; he was the founder of El Paso's Emergency Medical
1616 Service system and had served as chairman of the board of that
1717 organization and of the Texas Medical Association, the El Paso
1818 city-county health board, and El Paso First, where he fought to
1919 make health insurance available to children from low-income
2020 families; he had also served as president of the Texas Society of
2121 Pathologists and the El Paso County Medical Society; and
2222 WHEREAS, He was appointed by Governor Mark White to the
2323 Texas Tech University board of regents, where he worked to
2424 establish the El Paso medical school as a four-year institution;
2525 he worked statewide to improve the delivery of health care along
2626 the border, and he was honored by the Texas Society of
2727 Pathologists with the George J. Caldwell Award and received the
2828 Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Medical Association; and
2929 WHEREAS, Dr. McGee dedicated himself to his community, his
3030 state, and his country, and his warmth, wisdom, and valued
3131 counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
3232 WHEREAS, William McGee was a devoted husband, father, and
3333 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
3434 forever by his family and friends; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3636 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3737 family of Dr. William Gordon McGee; and, be it further
3838 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3939 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4040 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4141 memory of William Gordon McGee.
