2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the cattlemen of Texas on the grand occasion of Texas |
---|
4 | 4 | | Cattlemen's Day at the Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Cattle have been raised in Texas since the |
---|
6 | 6 | | mid-18th century when the Spanish established missions; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Beginning in the 1860s, ranching expanded |
---|
8 | 8 | | rapidly; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The first cattle drives on the legendary Chisholm |
---|
10 | 10 | | and Goodnight-Loving Trails headed north from Texas toward the |
---|
11 | 11 | | markets and railheads in Kansas; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, After interstate railroads were established in |
---|
13 | 13 | | Texas during the 1870s, cattle drives to the Midwest became |
---|
14 | 14 | | unnecessary, and communities such as Forth Worth and Amarillo |
---|
15 | 15 | | became points where herds were amassed for rail shipment across |
---|
16 | 16 | | the United States; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The dramatic growth of cattle feeding in Texas, |
---|
18 | 18 | | beginning in the 1950s, has made our state a leading provider of |
---|
19 | 19 | | grain-fed cattle desired by consumers around the world, and this |
---|
20 | 20 | | state supplies almost a third of the nation's fed beef; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Texas is the number one cattle-producing state, |
---|
22 | 22 | | with an inventory of 13.8 million cattle and calves; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The Texas cattle industry contributes almost $8 |
---|
24 | 24 | | billion in cash receipts and has a direct impact of $15 billion on |
---|
25 | 25 | | the state's economy; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Cattle production accounts for more than 70 |
---|
27 | 27 | | percent of livestock cash receipts and for almost half the total |
---|
28 | 28 | | for all agricultural products in Texas; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Cattle production has played a prominent role in |
---|
30 | 30 | | the culture and legacy of Texas; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Texas cattlemen have a proud heritage of animal |
---|
32 | 32 | | husbandry and land stewardship that continues to be strong today; |
---|
33 | 33 | | now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby honor these dedicated producers and their |
---|
36 | 36 | | contribution to the economy and culture of our state and declare |
---|
37 | 37 | | April 1, 2009, as Texas Cattlemen's Day at the Capitol; and, be it |
---|

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
40 | 40 | | the cattlemen of Texas as an expression of esteem from the Texas |
---|
