11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 545
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the cattlemen of Texas on the grand occasion of Texas
44 Cattlemen's Day at the Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Cattle have been raised in Texas since the
66 mid-18th century when the Spanish established missions; and
77 WHEREAS, Beginning in the 1860s, ranching expanded
88 rapidly; and
99 WHEREAS, The first cattle drives on the legendary Chisholm
1010 and Goodnight-Loving Trails headed north from Texas toward the
1111 markets and railheads in Kansas; and
1212 WHEREAS, After interstate railroads were established in
1313 Texas during the 1870s, cattle drives to the Midwest became
1414 unnecessary, and communities such as Forth Worth and Amarillo
1515 became points where herds were amassed for rail shipment across
1616 the United States; and
1717 WHEREAS, The dramatic growth of cattle feeding in Texas,
1818 beginning in the 1950s, has made our state a leading provider of
1919 grain-fed cattle desired by consumers around the world, and this
2020 state supplies almost a third of the nation's fed beef; and
2121 WHEREAS, Texas is the number one cattle-producing state,
2222 with an inventory of 13.8 million cattle and calves; and
2323 WHEREAS, The Texas cattle industry contributes almost $8
2424 billion in cash receipts and has a direct impact of $15 billion on
2525 the state's economy; and
2626 WHEREAS, Cattle production accounts for more than 70
2727 percent of livestock cash receipts and for almost half the total
2828 for all agricultural products in Texas; and
2929 WHEREAS, Cattle production has played a prominent role in
3030 the culture and legacy of Texas; and
3131 WHEREAS, Texas cattlemen have a proud heritage of animal
3232 husbandry and land stewardship that continues to be strong today;
3333 now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3535 Legislature, hereby honor these dedicated producers and their
3636 contribution to the economy and culture of our state and declare
3737 April 1, 2009, as Texas Cattlemen's Day at the Capitol; and, be it
3838 further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4040 the cattlemen of Texas as an expression of esteem from the Texas
4141 Senate.
