| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Paul Quinn College, which is commemorating 137 years of |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | excellence in education with a week of events from March 28 |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | through April 4, 2009, during its Founder's Observance 2009; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, One of the oldest liberal arts colleges for |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | African Americans, Paul Quinn College was founded in Austin on |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | April 4, 1872, by a group of African Methodist Episcopal |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | ministers; it was relocated to Waco five years later and named |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Waco College, and trades such as blacksmithing, carpentry, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | tanning, and saddle work were taught to newly-freed slaves; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The college was chartered by the State of Texas in |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | 1881 and renamed Paul Quinn College in honor of Bishop William |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Paul Quinn, under whose direction the African Methodist |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Episcopal Church had developed districts throughout the South; |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Under Bishop Quinn's leadership, the college |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | greatly increased its land ownership and expanded its curriculum |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | to include subjects like mathematics, Latin, music, and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | theology; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, Paul Quinn College is located in Dallas and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | continues to grow and expand under strong and determined |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | leadership; with its slogan of "137 Years of Combining Intellect |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and Faith," the Founder's Observance 2009 serves to celebrate the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | college's rich past while embracing the challenges of the future; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, and staff of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Paul Quinn College for their dedication to the school's founding |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | principles and extend to them best wishes for a memorable |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Founder's Observance 2009; and, be it further |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
