3 | 3 | | Heart Institute in Houston, Dr. James T. Willerson, has made an |

4 | 4 | | enduring contribution to the Lone Star State through his |

5 | 5 | | significant achievements in the field of medicine; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A native of Lampasas, James Willerson went on to |
---|
7 | 7 | | graduate from The University of Texas at Austin and Baylor |
---|
8 | 8 | | College of Medicine; he was an intern, a resident, and a research |
---|
9 | 9 | | and clinical fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston |
---|
10 | 10 | | and a clinical associate at the National Institutes of Health in |
---|
11 | 11 | | Maryland; after returning to his home state, Dr. Willerson joined |
---|
12 | 12 | | The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas as |
---|
13 | 13 | | a professor of medicine and director of the cardiology division, |
---|
14 | 14 | | and from 1989 through 2000, he was the chair of the Department of |
---|
15 | 15 | | Internal Medicine at The University of Texas Medical School at |
---|
16 | 16 | | Houston; he has also served as chief of medical services at |
---|
17 | 17 | | Memorial Hermann Hospital and as president of The University of |
---|
18 | 18 | | Texas Health Science Center at Houston; and |

19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his current roles as president |

20 | 20 | | and medical director, Dr. Willerson is the director of |

21 | 21 | | cardiovascular research and codirector of the Cullen |

22 | 22 | | Cardiovascular Research Laboratories at the Texas Heart |

23 | 23 | | Institute, and he is an adjunct professor at Baylor College of |

24 | 24 | | Medicine and at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer |

25 | 25 | | Center; moreover, he has established the Institute of Molecular |

26 | 26 | | Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases and TexGen |

27 | 27 | | Research, and he is the founder of two biotechnology companies, |

29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Willerson has dedicated himself to his field |

31 | 31 | | Association of Professors of Medicine and the Institute of |

32 | 32 | | Medicine of the National Academies; he is a former chair of the |

33 | 33 | | Cardiovascular and Renal Study Section of the National |

34 | 34 | | Institutes of Health, and he has served on various boards and |

35 | 35 | | committees of the American Heart Association; he has also been |

36 | 36 | | elected a fellow in the Royal Society of Medicine of the United |

37 | 37 | | Kingdom, and he was named an honorary member of the cardiology |

38 | 38 | | societies of Peru, Spain, Greece, Venezuela, and Chile; and |

39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Renowned for his expertise, Dr. Willerson has |

40 | 40 | | served as a visiting professor and invited lecturer at more than |

41 | 41 | | 220 institutions worldwide, and he has edited or coedited 24 |

42 | 42 | | textbooks, including the third edition of Cardiovascular |
---|
43 | 43 | | Medicine; he has published approximately 850 scientific |
---|
44 | 44 | | articles, and he has been active on the editorial boards for |
---|
45 | 45 | | several professional publications, including The New England |

46 | 46 | | Journal of Medicine and American Journal of Cardiology; he was |

47 | 47 | | also the longest-serving editor of Circulation, the journal of |

48 | 48 | | the American Heart Association; and |

49 | 49 | | WHEREAS, Recognized numerous times throughout his |

50 | 50 | | exemplary career, Dr. Willerson has received the Distinguished |

51 | 51 | | Scientist Award from the American College of Cardiology, the |

52 | 52 | | Medal of Merit from the International Academy of Cardiovascular |

53 | 53 | | Sciences, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cardiovascular |

54 | 54 | | Research Foundation, and the Living Legend Award from the World |

55 | 55 | | Society of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons; for his work with the |

56 | 56 | | American Heart Association, he was given the Award of Merit, the |

57 | 57 | | Distinguished Achievement and Distinguished Scientist awards, |
