11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 554
22 WHEREAS, The president and medical director of the Texas
33 Heart Institute in Houston, Dr. James T. Willerson, has made an
44 enduring contribution to the Lone Star State through his
55 significant achievements in the field of medicine; and
66 WHEREAS, A native of Lampasas, James Willerson went on to
77 graduate from The University of Texas at Austin and Baylor
88 College of Medicine; he was an intern, a resident, and a research
99 and clinical fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston
1010 and a clinical associate at the National Institutes of Health in
1111 Maryland; after returning to his home state, Dr. Willerson joined
1212 The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas as
1313 a professor of medicine and director of the cardiology division,
1414 and from 1989 through 2000, he was the chair of the Department of
1515 Internal Medicine at The University of Texas Medical School at
1616 Houston; he has also served as chief of medical services at
1717 Memorial Hermann Hospital and as president of The University of
1818 Texas Health Science Center at Houston; and
1919 WHEREAS, In addition to his current roles as president
2020 and medical director, Dr. Willerson is the director of
2121 cardiovascular research and codirector of the Cullen
2222 Cardiovascular Research Laboratories at the Texas Heart
2323 Institute, and he is an adjunct professor at Baylor College of
2424 Medicine and at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer
2525 Center; moreover, he has established the Institute of Molecular
2626 Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases and TexGen
2727 Research, and he is the founder of two biotechnology companies,
2828 Encysive and Volcano; and
2929 WHEREAS, Dr. Willerson has dedicated himself to his field
3030 by participating in a number of organizations, including the
3131 Association of Professors of Medicine and the Institute of
3232 Medicine of the National Academies; he is a former chair of the
3333 Cardiovascular and Renal Study Section of the National
3434 Institutes of Health, and he has served on various boards and
3535 committees of the American Heart Association; he has also been
3636 elected a fellow in the Royal Society of Medicine of the United
3737 Kingdom, and he was named an honorary member of the cardiology
3838 societies of Peru, Spain, Greece, Venezuela, and Chile; and
3939 WHEREAS, Renowned for his expertise, Dr. Willerson has
4040 served as a visiting professor and invited lecturer at more than
4141 220 institutions worldwide, and he has edited or coedited 24
4242 textbooks, including the third edition of Cardiovascular
4343 Medicine; he has published approximately 850 scientific
4444 articles, and he has been active on the editorial boards for
4545 several professional publications, including The New England
4646 Journal of Medicine and American Journal of Cardiology; he was
4747 also the longest-serving editor of Circulation, the journal of
4848 the American Heart Association; and
4949 WHEREAS, Recognized numerous times throughout his
5050 exemplary career, Dr. Willerson has received the Distinguished
5151 Scientist Award from the American College of Cardiology, the
5252 Medal of Merit from the International Academy of Cardiovascular
5353 Sciences, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cardiovascular
5454 Research Foundation, and the Living Legend Award from the World
5555 Society of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons; for his work with the
5656 American Heart Association, he was given the Award of Merit, the
5757 Distinguished Achievement and Distinguished Scientist awards,
5858 and the organization's highest accolade, the Gold Heart Award; he
5959 was also named a Distinguished Alumnus of Baylor College of
6060 Medicine and UT Austin and an "Outstanding Teacher" at UT
6161 Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and at UT Medical School at
6262 Houston; and
6363 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has demonstrated an
6464 unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of his fellow
6565 citizens, and he may indeed reflect with great pride on the
6666 positive impact he has had on the lives of others; now,
6767 therefore, be it
6868 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
6969 Legislature, hereby honor Dr. James T. Willerson on his notable
7070 accomplishments, commend him for his work to improve the health
7171 of people throughout the world, and extend to him sincere best
7272 wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
7373 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
7474 prepared for Dr. Willerson as an expression of high regard from
7575 the Texas Senate.
