1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 557
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	join the American Heart Association and citizens across the state
4	4	and country in celebrating April 8, 2009, as National Start!
5	5	Walking Day; and
6	6	WHEREAS, Each year, 1.26 million Americans suffer a new or
7	7	recurrent coronary attack, and cardiovascular disease is the
8	8	nation's leading cause of death, with direct and indirect costs
9	9	estimated to amount to $475.3 billion in 2009; and
10	10	WHEREAS, Regular walking or other physical activity
11	11	reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and increases life
12	12	expectancy; the American Heart Association recommends that
13	13	children engage in at least one hour of physical activity each
14	14	day and that adults engage in two and one-half hours of moderate
15	15	activity each week; and
16	16	WHEREAS, In addition to increasing life expectancy,
17	17	regular walking has many other proven health benefits; brisk
18	18	walking for 30 minutes every day can lower cholesterol and high
19	19	blood pressure and can help overweight individuals achieve and
20	20	maintain weight loss and reduce risk of stroke; and
21	21	WHEREAS, One of the best investments a company can make is
22	22	in the health of its employees, and by promoting a culture of
23	23	physical activity, corporate America can decrease health care
24	24	costs, increase productivity, and improve the quality of life and
25	25	longevity of the American worker; and
26	26	WHEREAS, National Start! Walking Day provides an
27	27	opportunity to heighten public awareness of the importance of
28	28	physical activity and serves as a day of inspiration for all
29	29	Americans to Start! Walking; now, therefore, be it
30	30	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
31	31	Legislature, hereby commend the American Heart Association for
32	32	its outstanding work on behalf of our country's citizens and urge
33	33	all Texans to celebrate National Start! Walking Day; and, be it
34	34	further
35	35	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
36	36	honor of National Start! Walking Day.
