2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, On January 29, 2009, proud residents of Hunt |

3 | 3 | | County are visiting Austin on the occasion of Hunt County Day at |

4 | 4 | | the State Capitol, presenting a fitting opportunity to celebrate |
---|
5 | 5 | | that vibrant region of the Lone Star State; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Located in the Blackland Prairie of northeastern |
---|
7 | 7 | | Texas, Hunt County was first inhabited by the Kiowa Indians; |
---|
8 | 8 | | Anglo settlers arrived in 1839, and the county was officially |
---|
9 | 9 | | formed from parts of Fannin and Nacogdoches Counties in 1846; |
---|
10 | 10 | | with Greenville as its seat, the county was named after Memucan |
---|
11 | 11 | | Hunt, secretary of the navy and minister to Washington under the |
---|
12 | 12 | | Republic of Texas; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, While the county's early economy depended mainly |
---|
14 | 14 | | on cotton, life changed dramatically after the Civil War; the |
---|
15 | 15 | | arrival of the railroad in the mid-1870s was a catalyst for 11 |
---|
16 | 16 | | communities that sprang up around train depots, and by the early |
---|
17 | 17 | | 20th century, Hunt County was home to the first municipally owned |
---|
18 | 18 | | public utilities in Texas and a number of industries centered |
---|
19 | 19 | | around the cotton trade, such as cotton-spinning mills, cotton |
---|
20 | 20 | | compresses, and a cottonseed-oil refinery; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Hunt County has continued to grow and today has |
---|
22 | 22 | | more than 82,000 residents; its diverse economy now includes such |
---|
23 | 23 | | industries as aircraft electronics and plastics distribution, |
---|
24 | 24 | | and eight Fortune 500 companies have offices in Greenville; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The county is well served by two institutions of |
---|
26 | 26 | | higher learning, Texas A&M University--Commerce and the |
---|
27 | 27 | | Greenville Center of Paris Junior College, and it is enriched by |
---|
28 | 28 | | a number of recreational and cultural attractions; picturesque |
---|
29 | 29 | | Lake Tawakoni State Park is a destination for boating, swimming, |
---|
30 | 30 | | camping, and hiking; the Mathews Prairie Nature Preserve, a |
---|
31 | 31 | | 100-acre tract of native prairie meadow that has never been |
---|
32 | 32 | | plowed, is ideal for birders and wildflower enthusiasts; and the |
---|
33 | 33 | | Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum commemorates the importance |
---|
34 | 34 | | of cotton to the region and celebrates the life of Hunt County |
---|
35 | 35 | | native Audie Murphy, film star and the most decorated American |
---|
36 | 36 | | soldier of World War II; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Hunt County may take justifiable |
---|
38 | 38 | | pride in their community and know that it has contributed |
---|
39 | 39 | | immensely to the history and vitality of Texas; now, therefore, |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |

42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby recognize January 29, 2009, as Hunt County |

43 | 43 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |

44 | 44 | | sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable stay in |
